I used to go barefoot a lot and use flip flops on land. On the rivers I used to wear water socks. I finally broke down and got some quality river shoes for kayaking and hiking. Got me some Teva Dozers. I read lots of reviews and everyone loves these shoes. Very comfy yet rugged for the rocky rivers.

Crocs Ace Boating clogs,

The nonslip insert makes all the difference versus the original crocs.

I wear vibram five fingers KSO's. You still feel like your bearfoot but they give you a little protection.

The ones i have are an older model of these...

I tried regular tevas the first couple times out but while wading in stained water I get the heebie jeebies about what I can't see under the surface and they didn't cover enough of my foot. Probably irrational but I stepped on an old rusty 9/0 hook at port aransas once in the surf and have been paranoid ever since. Truth is, I'd like a pair of good snake boots, but the goretex ones are pretty expensive.

One thing I absolutely won't do is step into water with anything less than perfect visability all the way to the bottom barefooted. I did that when I was 24 on the Blue river near where it feeds into Texoma. 21 stiches and 11 years later I still cannot stand for my foot to be touched on the bottom due to the nerve damage.

Those are keen, but they'd have to make the second toe longest for my wife to wear them. She's got tree climbing toes. lol

I always like to pack something so's I could walk ten miles on land - in case I have to abandon ship.

Same idea on a float tube trip

Unless you are wearing a grass skirt and sleeping in a ditch and eating only road kill, you too are part of 'the problem'.

In some of the reviews I read people say they use the tevas I bought to go running. Thats how comfy they are.

Yes, when I stepped on that hook I ended up having to go to a foot surgeon for evaluation. Turns out that I got lucky and had no serious infection and only minor nerve damage, so no surgery. He told me that something like 90% of the partial and full amputations he did were the result of barefoot/cheap flip flops while wading murky freshwater and that the worst cases hed seen were from vibrio in freshwater. Most people think that's only a problem in salt.

In other words is definitely worth it to invest in some sort of protection for your feet!
