Broken Bow: May 9. Water low to mid 60s and clear. Largemouth and smallmouth bass good on crankbaits, brush hogs and spinnerbaits at 5-10 ft. Catfish good on juglines and trotlines with cut bait and sunfish. Crappie good on minnows and jigs trolling. Report submitted by Dru Polk, game warden stationed in McCurtain County.

One you build and fish with your own hand built custom rod you will fish with nothing else!

Broken Bow has no stripers or hybrids. It has a good supply of sand bass. This time of year, big pods of sandies can be found in 20-40 ft of water. This lake can be a booger bear to figure out. Its commonly over 100 feet deep in areas. Attack this lake from the perimeters. The middle is generally deeper than heck.

I recommend you troll it. Get a map and fish the southern end of the lake. Bandit 300 series crank baits. Chartreuse shad color. Or, blue back and yellow belly.

Numerous points and islands exist. Hug these areas about 50-100 yards out from the shoreline. These Bandits run about 15 feet down from the surface. Watch your graph, try to stay in 20-30 feet of water. Troll at 2 mph +/-.

You will likely catch not only sand bass, but spots, crappie, and if you're lucky, some walleye. Walleye must be 18". There's a fair number of them in Broken Bow.

Man I would have loved to know this a few years ago when I went. Wound up trying to bass fish for three days.

It isn't as easy as that sounds, though. Those feesh are at certain spots. And my favorite time is in the heat of summer. July and August. Anyone wanting to teach me Tawakoni or Hubbard in exchange for Broken Bow, I'd be glad to hook up with ya. Maybe go, or at least exchange some tips.

I have had some luck up there hellpet trolling for sandies in about 20-25 foot of water lined up on long bank side of points, do one side, swing around and hit other side. Sandies tend to be a little bigger and a lot darker up there. If you want to get on the water about 5:15, the smallmouth/largemouth topwater bite is great in the backs of coves
