Went with my 6 year old son yesterday. Got on the water about 3:00pm. Fished various humps and points with a little luck...had maybe 6 or 7 whites by about 5:00pm. Went to try another spot and it was ON. Ended up with 35 solid keepers.
Slabs were the ticket. We used RJR slabs. I think they're made in Brenham. My son really got the hang of jigging those slabs. He's hooked on white bass fishing now. They were still biting when we left.

Thanks for the report - I was wondering when somerville would pick up again - seems like the last several reports on the main lake have been disappointing. Slabs are a great way for kids to fish artificials!
The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

Hey uncle, without giving up "the other spot" can you tell us if the whites were deep, or shallow, or if you found birds working? Did you try any roadrunners or soft shad-like baits? Thanks.

They were anywhere from 10 to 20 feet deep. They would just come through in schools. We were steadily catching fish for an hour and then they started to come up sporadically about 7:00pm and the birds started working over them. But we had found them long before the birds started working. I didn't see much other bird activity.
Pretty cool to see arches on your depthfinder and then catch them on a slab underneath the boat. We were anchored but drifting would work until you find where they are.
We used slabs only, didn't even try a roadrunner. Hope this helps.

I fished L.Somerville on Saturday with a buddy of mine. We started with the bank fisherman at Birch park and they were doing OK but the spawn is winding down pretty quick. We were more interested in fly fishing or spinning gear so we moved on down the lake to Apache Hills and wade fished the area down from the boat ramp. We did well on small LMbass but no whites. We each lost a good fish .. you know.. the one that got away! Lots of fisherman out on the lake in the morning.
Fisher03, I fish Lake Bryan often and the bass fishing has been pretty good overall. I was fishing out there Friday while the kids swam and caught several little bass. I hope the bass will start schooling again like they did last year, I really had a ball flyfishing out of my kayak.. I would get out there four or five times a week and like clockwork the bass would start chasing the shad on the surface.. http://www.texasfishingforum.com/cgibin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=13;t=000430

I fished the upper part of Somerville close to the island early Saturday morning. Our boat caught 20 good whites on shad. They were'nt biting too great, but had a good time. Many boats fishing the humps, but don't know how they were doing. Started to sprinkle about 11:30 as we were leaving.

How are you guys fishing these slabs? Are you dropping them straight down the side of the boat and just picking them up and letting them fall as you drift? Or are you casting them? I have never fished slabs before, but see that they are putting fish in the boat. Hopefully some of yall that know what yall are doing can help a rookie out.

You can fish them either way...let it hit the bottom and jig it up and be ready when it falls..thats when they nail it. Experiment with how hard you jig it up...sometimes they want it ripped past them...other times they might want a more subtle presentation.
I usually want to mark fish on my Lowrance before I start fishing. Once you anchor you can either cast them and jig 'em back in or vertical jig over the side.
Its a good idea to catch shad even if you plan on doing some slabbin' cause sometimes they won't eat a slab....but when they are feeding good they'll eat just about anything you throw at 'em.

Look for points and humps anywhere from 9-20 feet. Sometimes they'll be on top of the point, sometimes on the side of it. You just have to find them.
I haven't caught any hybrids this year though. I wonder if they are hangin' with the whites or if they're doing their own thing. Anyone catching the big boys?

unclefish, did you see any gulls working over schooling whites on the lake early or late in the day.I been told that this is the time of year that this begins to happen with great frequency, on somerville.

We fished in the afternoon and saw no birds working at all. After we found some fish very late in the day a few started working over the school we had already found. I haven't been out early morning yet.
I might be out there this weekend. I'll post up if I go. Good luck to everyone.

I just started using my graph (fishfinder) and am kind of miffed at it. It always shows fish pretty much where you would expect them to be but I have yet to capitalize on finding them with the graph. I should mention that I fish out of a kayak and can't really get out too far out in open water and still be safe. I'm thinking of getting decent bass boat but haven't consulted with the boss (she wants a newer car) and it is hard to justify another play toy.
