can anyone give me any tips for fishing below the dam on lake granbury? I seem to remember seeing some posts on the subject but can't find them. Was thinking of walking down behind the dam in the morning.

It's not like it use to be in the days of old. You can't get within x-amount of feet of the dam and that was usually the best place to fish right at the sluice wall when they had the mud gate open on the opposite side. It use to be one heck of a walk in but I understand they put a parking area in closer to the dam.

If you have hip waders and the water is low there are several places that you can wade out and stand on some rocks to cast big surface baits. It's a balancing act and with the threat of more rain, be ready to get out pronto when they sound the horn to release water. I used a 10-ft. spinning outfit and a 4-oz. pencil popper to reach the deeper holes. Caught some really nice stripers like that from there.

There's a big deep hole right below there. You are able to wade across in that area to get to the other side but as I said you are taking a huge risk at this time to do that because you won't have time to run back up the bank and wade back across if they sound the siren.

If they are running water and the rocks are covered, 1-oz. jigs are good but remember those rocks I was talking about? They love to eat big jigs when they disappear below water level!

WARNING! DO NOT try the wading if they have any of the main gates open! The river MUST BE dead low in order to reduce the risk of being swept away. The one main reason they closed off getting close to the dam was several people have drowned there because they did not respect the power of water. You may not be afraid of water but NEVER EVER lose your respect for it. You can be dead in a New York minute! If you think I'm just trying to scare you, well, I am and I mean it - don't go brain dead - think about what you're doing and weigh the risk against the weather.

It's NOT like fishing below Texoma Dam - it does NOT have a gradient shoreline into the river bed to fish from like Texoma does below the dam. Hip waders are almost a must below Granbury, not so at Texoma dam.

Redfin is right on,I also used to fish that area in days of old could load up on the sandbass, and catfishing was good also. best if you go have some one with you. Just getting down to the water with all your gear is a feat in its self ,best to not take a lot with you I always use a vest the one with all the pockets and usually only 1 rod. if you catch a lot it will be a struggle to get them back up the bank but well worth it.
I wade the river if the main gates are not open .
When you go down by the fence if you go about 100-150 yds down stream the water gets a little shallower(Depends on water flow) will still get about waist deep.
Have fun be careful.
Last time I was down there they had the parking lot closed off.

thanks everyone for the input. I appreciate it. I would be going alone so maybe i should just stick to squaw creek shoreline.
