Looking for some help on what my problem may be. I drive a 2001 Chevy Silverado V8 5.3L extended cab. My ABS and brake light have been coming on randomly now for the past year or so. Here in the last month or so the light has been coming on alot more frequently. Brakes seem to be working fine but I am no expert. It seems as though when i make a strong left or right turn the light will come (happens quite a bit pulling in and out of a gas station).

Alot of the time I am able to shut the engine off, straighten the tires and press the emergency brake. Turn engine back on and release the emergency brake and the light will go off (most of the time) The problem seems to be getting worse and I think it is time to take care of this before I cause major damge or have a major brake failure...any help?

When your ABS light comes on, it means that your antilock brake system is malfunctioning. Your vehicle's computer has likely stored a trouble code in it's memory as a result. A technician in an auto shop can probably pull the code out of memory and tell you what's wrong for sure. I think they could pull the code for you at O'Reilly's also.

If the brake light is coming on WITH the ABS light, I would get it checked out soon. The ABS light alone is not a big deal--it only means you have lost the antilock function and you still have your "regular" brakes. If the brake light appears with the ABS light, it could be something much more important.

It could be that both lights are very easy to fix (ABS wheel sensor or switch). My advice? Take it to a shop you trust in Dallas.

One other thing on the brake light...you're sure the brake fluid level in the reservoir under the hood is okay, right? There's a sensor in there and if it's low, it will turn on the brake light.

There really isn't any good reason for your brake fluid to be low, though. If you're adding brake fluid, it's likely the result of another problem. Sorry not to be much help.

Any direction is better than no direction...brake fluid is good.

My chevy was doing the same thing. Took it in and told me the (can't remember the name) has gone bad. It is down under by the driver side by the gas tank.
900 bucks to replace.
They told me it was NOT effecting the brakes from working or not. Going on five years now and still have not replaced it.
Lights are still on.

I guess that would (possibly) explain why it usually comes on when I am at the gas station

You need an ABS module. I am in the car business and have to get them reprogramed all the time. That year tahoe/silverado/suburban is terrible about fuel pumps and abs modules.

abs module is last resort. could be a simple sensor. throwing parts at something without a diagnosis gets expensive.

Any idea on what the reprogramming runs or how much a replacement runs. I will try to run to Oreilly or Auto Zone tomorrow to get the codes checked....Thanks everyone for the help

Mine does the same thing. Gas gauge also...

Here is a link that I found. they will repair your module(If possible) for around $100.

Mine comes on too. I have found that when it does the cruise control does not work. All I have to do is pull over and cycle the key a couple of times and it goes off and the cruise works again. Also when first starting, if I turn the key on and let everything including the fuel pump pressure up before starting, and then when it does start wait for the oil pressure to get stabile, it does not come on. It seems to only come on when I hurriedly start and go.

99 Silverado I used to have started buzzing when the anti-lock module went out. Luckily it was still under warranty, they wanted something like a grand to replace it.

pull the code first,it could be as simple as a bad speed sensor and are hub assembly with builtin speed sensor.
