My Dad and I visited Amistad for the 2nd time, fishing 5-11 through 5-17. We caught fish on lots of baits, with the most productive being Spooks, jerkbaits and plastics- especially senko type baits.
Everyday we ran across some surfacing fish that were eager to smash a Spook. Any time of day you could find a sporadic topwater bite anywhere from shallow (<10') in the peppergrass/pondweed to over river channels (>100').
On days when we had to hide from the wind we could catch quite a few fishing protected main lake points with dropshot and jerkbaits.
Our big fish along with most numbers though came from working hydrilla beds in 20'-30' with plastics. Big watermelon worms like Zippers and 10" Powerworms worked well but the senko type baits was the real killer. WM red, WM, GP purple flake were the best colors and the 1/4 oz. weighted 6" Dinger was my personal fave.
Our slowest day that was storm shortened resulted in 25-30 fish. Our best days had 50-60 fish. Big fish for the trip was an 8-3 caught west of Box Canyon and we also had a 7, a 7-2 and a 7-5, along with gobs of 2-3lb fish during the trip. Our best areas were Evans, from Box Canyon to west of Cow Creek and the mouth of the Devils River.
Amistad is just so beautiful- I hardly want to wet my boat around here after a week down there!!I can't wait for another trip to those beautiful waters!
