I am looking to a new Blue Wave CC and and would like to hear some opinions on the 4 stroke or the new HPDI motor. I have now a Vmax 175 on my 22 foot and am happy with that. I know two peple with 4 strokes and they like them but that is a small percentage to look at.

Bird Dog-

I've got the 200 HP HPDI on the back of my 22' Blue Wave for over a year now and it seems to be a great motor. With the exception of a bad wiring for the tilt/trim (fixed in less than a day at the dealer), I haven't had any problems.

It actually starts as easy or easier than most cars, even in the coldest months on Texoma. Honestly, I really don't think about it much b/c I don't have to. Fuel efficiency seems to be pretty good and it'll get my boat up to mid-50's even with 3 guys and a bait tank.

Have fun picking one out.

BD, I have the 18' Blue Wave with the 115 4 stroke on it. i am very happy with it. It starts and runs great everytime. I have heard good stuff about the HPDI as well. The only down side of the 4 stroke is the little bit of added weight but with a bigger boat i think a lot of that would nulify. I can troll all day with my motor without it building up or getting fouled. I am not sure about the HPDI on that count. Hope this helps some.

For overall performance and virtually identical gas mileage the 2 stroke HPDI is the way to go. Not sure about the cost diff though.

BUY A YAMAHA. EVERY THING ELSE IS AN OVERHALL WAITING TO HAPPEN. MY 2STROKE SALWATER 200 HAS BEEN AT IT HARD FOR EIGHT YEARS NOW. OFFSHORE,INSHORE, EVERYTHING. I HAVE INVESTED IN 4 SETS OF SPARK PLUGS, ONE OIL LEVEL SENSOR,ONE TRIM RELAY AND ONE WATER PUMP. LESS THAN $250.00 IN PARTS IN EIGHT YEARS. I WAS ABLE TO TROUBLESHOOT AND FIX EACH PROPLEM ON MY OWN. JAME RAWLS A FRIEND OF MINE ALSO HAS A 225 SALTWATER SERIES THAT IS 12 YEARS OLD. ITS WORE OUT AND TIRED. EIGHT SETS OF PLUGS, A WATER PUMP, AND A FEW ODDS AND ENDS. NEEDS TO BE REBUILT SOON BECAUSE OF STUCK RINGS. YAMAHA IS THE WAY TO GO.

I own a Yamaha but have owned Johnson, Evinrude and Mercury. The Yamaha is the best outboard I have owned. Best quality and it starts and runs great. I would go with the 2 stroke. The 4 strokes are larger, heavier and cost more $. I have also read that they don't have the torque of the 2 stroke, but they are supposed to be very quiet. Just my .02 People will always have their own opinions on their favorite outboards, reels, rods, lures, depthfinders, etc.

If you go to a place like the iboats outboard repair forum, look for a thread asking about Yamaha's. Take note of how many Johnson, Evinrude, Force and Mercury help threads are started. That will give you a clue.

I know that there are probably more of OMC/Merc motors on the water but the requests for help are disproportionate to the actual numbers on the water.

Yamaha, Tohatsu, and Suzuki are good motors and worth the investment.

BIRD DOG, I HAVE A BLUEWAVE 189 CC WITH A 150 YAMAHA 2 STROKE.LOVE THE BOAT AND THE MOTOR, BUT IF I DID IT OVER I WOULD GET THE 4 STROKE JUST FOR THE FUEL EFFICIENCY. DONT KNOW WHAT DEALER YOUR TALKING TO, BUT I BOUGHT MINE FROM RAY'S MARINE IN SAN ANTONIO, THEY BEAT PHIL DILL BY MORE THAN $2000. WITH JUST A PHONE CALL // GOOD LUCK //BOZZ [with 4 strokes and they like them but that is a small percentage to look at. [/B][/QUOTE]

THE AXMAN HAS A SAYING AND I WILL BUTCHER IT AND HOPEFULLY HE WILL CORRECT ME.

IF YOU WANT TO GO CHEAP, GO JOHNSON/EVINRUDE,
IF YOU WANT TO GO TO THE SHOP, GO MERCURY,
IF YOU WANT TO GO HOME, GO YAMMAHAMMER!

WISH I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT THE HPDI OR THE 4 STROKE, BUT I AM PLEASED WITH MY OX66 SALTWATER 150 FUEL INJECTED, BUT WISH I HAD GONE BETTER JUST TO HAVE IT.

I am getting a Yamaha and fuel economy is not an issue with the HPDI and the four stroke. This will be my third Blue Wave so by now I know exactly how I want it built from the factory.I hope to keep it for at least 6 years. I want a motor that will last me that long without issues. I also need power as I sometimes have a total 70 gallons in shad tank water front and back, fuel and four to 6 people. My 175 VMaX does a fine job with that now. Will a four stroke???

i did not know you had two bait tanks on the boat now.....but i imagine your fuel economy will be higher and the motor will be quieter and faster.

Blue Wave here too, I am about to go looking for another one (GREAT BOAT!). Thanks for the Yamaha thread, I was concerned about BW using them because I was just not familiar with them, but I have to say this thread is changing my mind quickly. I do not know if Dill still carries BW, but Plano marine does.

I understand that Plano Marine is the only DFW area "box" Yamaha dealer, ie they can order and sell "loose in the box" engines. In other markets like Houston or New Orleans there may be several Box dealers to choose from. I know I've talked with several box dealers from Florida, Virginia, Alabama and South Carolina and their prices are sometimes substantially different, although personally before I sent a check to some dealer for an engine I'd have to be able to inspect it and bring it home with me. Yamaha warranty's have to be honored by any and every Yamaha dealer in the country just like a Ford or GM dealer would regardless of where you bought the vehicle. So if you either have a dealer who can rig the boat or rig it yourself you might want to see if you can save some money that way. Blackbeard Marine in Willis Oklahoma, just beyond the north end of the Hwy377 bridge across the west end of Texoma north of Whitesboro is also a Yamaha dealer. All the other DFW area dealers that sell Yamaha engines are ones that come on new factory rigged boats, but several are now factory certified warranty service centers...I know Barber's in Dallas is. You can now order Yamaha on a number of different boat brands from the boat factory and it is probably cheaper to do it that way for everybody involved.
I've been running a Yammer OX66 150 now for 2 years on a 2300 lb Key West 216 Bay Reef. After figuring out how to re rig the boat properly after my dealer went out of business I am satisfied with the engine more than any other I've ever owned of the 8 previous boats I've owned that had mostly Merc's and a few Johnson's on them. I did make a mistake with a 12 year old 175 Yamaha that had lived in Saltwater with little or no maintainence but was impressed enough to go back and buy a new Yammer instead of something else. I also think if I had it to do over I would buy a larger engine - my boat is rated for a 250! and the little 150 is the smallest recc'd size by the factory - and probably a HPDI or 4 stroke. As far as 4 strokes go for my money it would be a tossup between Yamaha and Honda in a 225 as I could use a little more weight in a 21'6" boat when Texoma gets PMS and rough like it is famous for. However if I were running around in Aransas Bay or further south I'd want a lighter engine and a shallower drafted boat than the 12"s I have now anyway. North of Aransas or Matagorda I'd probably go with the deeper V bottom bayboat I have and use the 4 stroke's better economy to get offshore and back weather permitting. Really too close to call for a general statement. Freshwater? in a big CC bayboat not on Texoma probably the HPDI for speed since fuel mileage is not a factor unless you are 250/300 day a year user. Then the 4 stoker for sure since they are supposed to run double or triple the 1000/2000 hour est'd life of a 2 cycle. Thats my 2 cents worth anyway.
