John Hope did a great study of just this idea. He tagged large bass in different lakes and followed them to see what they did. His book makes for a great read. He basically found that the bass varied just like any other animal. Some made a beeline for wherever they were caught. Some hung around the release area for varying lenghts of time and then went home, while others took up a new residence. If you guys get a chance to read his book you will be surprised by many of his findings.

I like to watch the bass after I release them. It's been my experience that if you catch a bass, keep him out of the water for a minimal amount of time, and release him in the same area that you caught him..... he'll swim directly back towards the spot that you caught him at.
Maybe it's just me.... but on a catch-and-release trip, watch which direction the fish swims when released.

I caught a fish that weighed 2.66 lbs in a tournament one time. About 3 months later I caught a fish in the exact same spot, and it wieghed 2.67. I don't think it was the same fish, but it was still amusing. It was about a mile from the weigh-in site.

We fished a small lake in Oklahoma and off a point we caught a dark beat up 4 ponder and came back 5 hours later and caught him again. The answer is yes.

One of the bass submitted in the Toledo Bend lunker program was caught three differant times. One of those times was back near the area where it was first caught, Miles from the release site at Pendleton Bridge. The other catch was roughly half way back to its home range. The fish had also gained two pounds between catches on one of the occasions. This story was told by a Sabine River Authority person on stage at the Mc Donalds tournament on the bend three or ffour years ago.
