guess i shouldnt mention i have a few harrington 542 blanks for sale. probably overkill for freshwater fishing anyhow.

FTU's black surfblanks are clones of he Harrington blanks...and you can get them in houston. grin

Those 542 blanks aren't cheap from what I can remember. They are nizzice though!

i have a blank called "broomstick" in my pantry i'm about to bust out and put guides and a reelseat on them.

Make sure you take the straw sweepers off the bottom before you do that....

thanks for all the replies,looks like its gona be trial and error,no easy ansers.

i dont want the top of the line stuff or break the bank just decent reliable equipment that will perform pretty close to the high end stuff.

saw some stuff at academy that looks decent ,i may just start w/that and go from there.

by the way when you guys talk about "blanks" what are they?

best rod at academy is tsunami trophy series or something....under $100 and tough rods, just a tad on the heavy side. I had one of those until SOMEONE left it at the dam after we left, came back and someone already got a free rod compliments of me.

just got a deal for 2 new shimano stella 8000SW's down here in florida for $400 a piece. awesome reels, probably gonna get rid of them whenever i head up to DD. i just dont really need them but i couldnt pass that deal up.

try and go get you one. theyre a bit pricey but its all worth it
