perfect, I was gonna start a thread about surfside. I went there today, 11am to 8pm. Not many people out there today (about 20 on the whole jetty) and no one was catching anything worthy. I spent 3 hours catching croakers to use as bait since reds may come in later on as they usually do. live shrimps didn't work at all, nor was berkley gulp. caught 4 croakers (no typo, four!). Nobody around me was catching a thing except that guy who got a speck. I spent the next few hours doing nothing, waiting til the clock hit 4pm--->big bait time. I missed like 4 hooksets and on the 5th time managed to land a 3ft shark.later on the wind started blowing like crazy (or it had been that way w/o me noticing), my 2oz sinker could reach the distance of a regular float on calm days. Those guys with 10ft+ rods could hardly reach 20 yards. called it a day. headed home empty handed. gas + bait + misc close to 50 bucks down the drain.

If you had fun it is never a waste $$$$$. If you didn't have fun, remember you could have been at work.

I usually keep just a few fish and would give most of them away so it's not actually about moneytary value. I wouldn't go until perhaps about thursday next week if the weather allows. it may keep raining for the next few days

I went out yesterday and just walked the jetty-didn't fish. Just moved here from Dallas and have been spending my time asking for advice and recommendations on how to fish surf and jetties. The 20 or so people I saw on the jetty did not catch anything for the hour I was there. All were fishing with dead or live shrimp under floats. Windy. Dirty water to about half way out then started clearing. I thought there would be more people fishing out on the end of the jetty (cleaner deeper water??) but most were about the middle. Still trying to decide if I spend my time surf fishing or going to the jetty.

It depends on what you want to fish for. If the water is green and the temperature is right, it is just a matter of time before schools of trout come rushing through. I have fished perfect water at the jetties with birds, baitfish...everything moving and didn't catch a fish for hours. When the bite turned on, I had a 10 trout limit in 25 minutes.

5/18/10 Got to surf side jetty at 2:00pm.Fish was on the slow side until about 3:30pm, then most every one with bait under a cork was hauling in huge smacks. It was none stop action until dark. This was one of those day that I regret for not buying any live shrimp.I ended with 10 large smacks. The larges one measuring 24 inch.I was using chrome spoons.Today the smacks was not interested in spoons because people with live bait was hauling fish left and right.Me and many others with spoon had to work real hard for our fish.Water was clear green all the way to the beach.Waves was 1 to 2 foot.I gutted all the smacks and every single one had shrimp in there stomach.

5/17/10 I was there on Monday @ 1pm on the 17th and stayed there until 6pm. The fish was very slow in taking live shrimp. Got most of my fish with live/ fresh mullet. Caught Jack Crevalle (2), sharks (3), and a few smack (3)but only kept the smack. I should of came back on Tuesday but decided to go Galveston and try out 21st street pier and wading. After hearing your report, I guess in hind sight I made the wrong move. Should of gone back to Surfside on Tuesday. See I bought a "PINT" of shrimp from the "Bridge" on Monday and still had a lot of live shrimp left over. I figured I might have had better luck catching smack off the pier or speckled trout in the bay. Nothing was biting off the pier. The speckled trout was there but it wasn't biting live shrimp because there was too many bait in the bay. I ended up letting over a couple dozen shrimp go to live another day. A lot can change in a day @ Surfside jetty. Got some nice pics from Surfside Monday the 17th but don't have URL to upload it to, sorry.

I haven't seen a single king caught this year as of yet.I think not until we start seeing huge school of mullet roaming the jetties on a daily bases.I think that's what attract the kings and other fishes to the jetties.I did not see any mullet schooling on the surface Tuesday. This year has been an awkward unpredictable year for fishing the jetties, plus with all windy days, might also contribute to this year slow fishing.(Where are all the mullets)? You will have to settle for big Smacks right now. They fight just as hard as kings especially the big ones.
