Well maybe the picture is accurate and the story has a typo? For sure looks like a black crappie to me too.

Great story and great accomplishment, however. Something we all dream of.

If I remember right one of the tell tales between black and whit crappie was the number of dorsal fin spines. I sure could not count them. They are not that much different in coloration depending on the water they are taken from.

i wouldnt be overly concerned since the story was a hoax anyway, i talked to a guy on a minnesota fising board just a few minutes ago who faxed me a news paper clipping of the same fish and story dated 2 years ago

All these big pretty crappie, Wow! That first one looks like a football he's/she's so fat. The next one sure looks awesome too and them 16" fish don't come around ever day. I love catching the big ones as I feel most do. I know I really get a thrill with any crappie 16" and over, heck them 15" ain't bad either, LOL!

Congrats on you guys and gals catches.

ya..i was buying the article fellas, to start with that is a black crappie w out a doubt. so if the article is wrong on the sub-species...highly likely its wrong on the weight...and i may be way off on this cause ive never fished north of oklahoma.. but the pics ive seen of northern cold water crappie..they all seem to have a much diff color to them..some of them icve seen have a really definate goldish tint to them especially he blacks. that looks like our native black crappie...but its still a dang big one. if u ask me the one hoisted up by crappie gal is bigger..just sayin..dont seem right to me

I agree there is something about the way a 16 inch plus crappie fights, you just feel the massive head shakes and know you gotta a real slab on. To me its a totally different fight then a smaller crappie. Dont get me wrong i love them 10 inchers also but the big ones just get your hearbeat going.
