I wasn't quite sure where to post this, but I was wondering if there are any Texas Game Wardens on this forum.
I'm interviewing very soon and have a few questions about the hiring process. You can PM me or reply to this post. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I've wished for a long time that a warden or two could find the time to hang out with us here every now and then. But I'm not aware of any doing so. Shame...we need more interaction with LEOs. I know some of them have a us against them attitude towards the public...just as many of the public have towards them. Not a good road to go down for anybody. we are all for the most part interested in maintaining our natural resources and enjoying the outdoors. We have a common dislike for lawbreaking scumbags. We could sure benefit from a little more friendly communication in a laid back atmosphere I'd bet. If there are some wardens on here I'm not aware of then I'm glad to have yall onboard. I realize that spare time is often a premium for wardens, but I think this should be done on state time on occasion as it would benefit us all.

As for participating on the TFF on state time, I hate to say never, but that just won't happen. Some taxpayers would make it a big deal. Further, I'd rather see them out in the field as much as possible. I don't think I've ever seen a regulations type question asked on here that couldn't be answered by visiting the TPWD website.

I'm not a GW but I do know a little about the process. The application process is lengthy. There are going to want to know everything about you and your past. They will call your references. They will come by your house and meet you and see how you live. You should do a ride along. I think nowadays it helps to be bilingual. Get ready for Lieutenant Brooks in the academy. She is small but very intense. Don't take her lightly she will beat you at everything. Learn to swim if you don't already know how. It will serve you well for the water survival training. As a GW be ready to fight cause you are going to fight someone sooner or later and in the academy they will train you to not pull your weapon. It seems to be preferred that you fight your way out. Remember "bull in the ring" training in football, you will be doing it again in the academy.

You walk up on someone (or more than likely more than one) that is poaching and can possibly have their vehicle, guns and anything else the GW may want to take will probably make some people want to save themselves by doing harm (putting it mildly) to the GW officer. Hats off to them all - probably under paid too.

My brother is a GW. Another brother is a PD in San Marcos. Me and my fishing buddy are PD in New Braunfels. We all visit TFF for time to time. I bet you have a lot more LEO on here than you would think. As for applying with GW, I say go for it. They were hiring like crazy. You will go through an extensive background but its well worth it. My brother loves it.

I agree. 500 wardens just isn't enough. They do a heckuva job, IMO.

FYI - they don't just call your references, the investigating GW will personally go see and visit with them. Yes, they are underpaid especially for the # of hours they work and the amount of time they are away from their families....they are effectively on call 24/7 Next time you see one out in the field, take a moment to thank them for the job they do protecting our natural resources and sometimes even our lives.

A+, Steve. I do the same. I've never met a state Game Warden that was not friendly, and I have been checked on the water many times and in the field several. Perhaps it's the Eddie Haskell in me or maybe it's because I always treat them with respect and courtesy from the start. Folks have bad-mouthed one of the Lake Fork Wardens on here before. I met him Saturday at Moser's and he seemed like a heckuva nice guy to me.
Yes, anyone can have a bad day and be less than cordial. But I have found that almost all folks in the law enforcement business respond favorably if we're not defensive. Initially, they don't know you from Adam and are trained to be wary. Once they see you're no threat and are responsive, their demeanor typically changes quickly.
To any GW, LEO, First Responder or Military reading this, thanks for your service!
