Do what I do and let him pay the tourney fee. When ya'll keep losing tourneys he will either stop wanting to go or he will start listening. Nothing works better than wasting someone elses $$$$

Sit down with him and watch a couple of fishing tournament shows. It will show that there are successful anglers using patterns that aren't necessarily shallow. A couple of the most recent Bassmaster tournaments had guys on ledge/ditch patterns and they explained it with graphics and all that.

He likes shallow because it usually gives him a target to throw at like a log, stick-up, etc...it's something he can see. He can't see what he's throwing at out deep...maybe if you had some screen shots of the ridge or other deep water stuff you fish he would begin to understand the "target" better and get more comfortable with it. You are fishing guys not tournament partners. Look for some one for tournament fishing!

If you don't feel comfortable discussing this with him, you guys are destined to lose. IMO open lines of communication is imperative to successful tournament partners.

We used to call this the marriage made in hell. Take two decent or good people with different styles and team them up. Typically way easier to beat them as a team.

First I want to know what was in that 24lb sack they caught. I would roll up and ask them "what's in the sack?"
Next, I would get your partner a subscription to BASS or some other fishing magazine that talks plenty about fishing structure. Your partner like to fish visible cover and thinks 2 or 3 blowups is hot fishing, and it is if you are just enjoying your day. When it's time to put slime in the boat though, you have to find a place you can sack them up and have a good shot a a kicker. You cannot beat the bank hoping for a blowup on a frog, and even if you get one the hookup ratios aren't that great.
There are plenty of great tournament fisherman who do very well on banks and cover, but these people work the entire spectrum until the find a pattern, then they look for other areas that hold a similar structure or temp or clarity or whatever the fish are holding to.
You and he partner up with two other people a couple of times in small tourneys, maybe he needs to hear it from someone else as well.
How serious are you? How serious is he? Do you want a good time with a buddy with a shot at some money or do you want to be a tournament fisherman? You have to decide.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know when to go fishing.

guy sounds just like Karl Elliot.... texanforliberty......guy wants to fish 2 feet deep at amistad in jan. 43 degree water Isn't it funny how you can knock me, but can't beat me, I managed a 16# sack in Feburary at Amistad throwing a buzzbait, that's right a buzzbait, and got paid for it. Here's the deal, if you think you can out fish me on any lake put up some money, I'll match it and we'll see who wins. But of course you won't because you know you can't beat me, and that must really drive you nuts, since you're the one who got me started in this sport. I recommend you backing off, or back it up!
