We are going to try to go fishing in the morning on Calaveres. It will be the last time we get to go until September because of our jobs so I was wondering if anyone has a decent report or would we be better off going on to Choke?

Day before yesterday I asked for a report on Calaveras and no one responded so Im guessing that yall havent had a chance to fish there yet. I dont normally fish there and wont get to go back for a while so heres the scoop on it. Go, Go now!
We hit the lake at about 7:00. We saw several guides launching or already on the water. We used a cast net and caught enough shad and perch at that boat ramp. I threw the net by the reeds to the left of the ramp and caught enough in about 4 throws.
We fished by the power lines with nothing. There was a guide and a couple of guys fishing by the reeds but I didnt see any of them catching anything. We moved along the shore line fishing shallow with no results.
We were going to go check out the concrete wall and on the way decided to stop and try the shallow water just before you get to the wall. We were on the same side as the boat ramps. We were using every kind of punch bait, stink bait, all that stinky stuff that you can think of with no results. We were also using live bait, shrimp and chicken liver.
Just so you can find it, there is a willow tree with a hole in the side of it that faces the water. Anchor off there in about 10 feet of water and cast towards that tree. We started catching channel cats one after the next on chicken liver. After the day was done, we caught 5 striped bass, 16 reds, limits of channel cats and several perch that were absolutely huge! Everything was too small to keep except the catfish. We didnt have to throw back a single one.
All of the cats were filled with eggs. We didnt catch a single fish on any of that stinky stuff. We only caught one on shrimp, nothing on live bait and everything else on chicken liver.

I've had a lot of people P.M. me asking about where this place is and how we were catching them. So here ya go.
When you come into the park on 1604, launch at that ramp and go straight out across the lake. Look back to the left and you will see the Concrete wall. Right before you get to the wall, turn right and youll see the Willow tree with the hole in it that Im talking about. Really anywhere along that shoreline should work because we were having a hard time anchoring off and drifted a lot. We were fishing with liver on the bottom. Use a small egg weight then swivel then a leader and a small treble hooks.

Good luck, we tried all over the place, but only really caught fish next to the bank leading up to the wall. I had just told my buddy that I had never caught a red fish then we caught 16. I just wish they would have been big enough to keep. Oh well it was fun just the same.

I'm glad you caught some fish there. I dropped five gallons of chum in that spot the evening before, right at dark. Had it left over and didn't want to take it back home.
