I tie line directly to Mepps. The extra snap-swivel hardware negatively affects the presentation in my opinion. The only time I have problem with line twisting is when I put a weight up above the Mepps as I do with a #2 or 3. I use mash-on 1/4 oz and, if I am not careful in the way I mash the ends, it will cause line twist, i.e. I accidently created a propeller(sp?) shape. Have to make sure the mashed ends are parallel to each other. Also, you can get line twist if you don't check the wire of the Mepps. On a hard strike the fish will bend the wire ,and if I don't notice and cast it that way, I likely won't catch a fish and my line may twist some.

I have a low end Eagle Cuda 300 fish finder. It has a setting that "marks" fish by displaying a computer image of a fish and its depth. On some occassions it has found fish but other times I think it is something other than fish.

Are these low end sonars capable of marking the fish? Is it best to turn of the fish marking capability and just look at the sonar return? What am I wanting to see?

Any advice would be useful?

Thanks so much for all the feedback. This is the best thread I have been a part of.

Do not use the Fish ID. It sucks. There are several websites and plenty of people on this forum that can help you learn how to read the sonar images.

This may help. Also you might try the hummingbird website. If you like to catfish Tinys website is hard to beat for information on many different subjects. Look under fishfinder info. thumb
Also here on the forum look under the general equipment section. There's a guy by the name of "baitfish" I believe. I think he works for lowrance.

I have an Eagle Fish Easy 320c. I have had it for 2 years now. You can't get too much lower on the low end than that.
I have to agree with BS_Fisher.
Just this weekend on RC, I finally learned how to set it on manual so that I can see the fish curves. It really works great. I even noticed an echo from my slab as I reeled it up to the surface.
You just can't see that kind of detail using the Fish ID.

I'm still workin' it, but I'm on the scent now.

Try it!

Hey guys I would love to learn some techniques for night fishing for sandbass. I have used a crappie light and minnows in the past but with limited success, are they in the same kind of places as during the day (humps, open water structure, and deeper flats) or are in shallower water? And what kind of lures/techniques do you use to catch them? I love to night fish especially with the hotter weather approaching any and all help would be greatly appreciated

A few weeks ago on Pool we headed over to a point w/ a small shallow cove that has a rocky shelf that drops off into deeper water looking for blacks. It was about 0630 when we got out there and the water was just boiling with sandies. After about 30 minutes of playing "see if you can get your lure back to the boat without a sandie attached to it" we started working the afore mentioned shelf for blacks. Had a little luck then moved on to some other spots. Later in the day we came back and worked the shelf again all up and down the point. Before long a little bit of distance off the point sandies started hopping on the top again! It lasted about another 30 minutes before they moved off. My fishing partner said we probably pushed the shad that were in close to the shore out over the deeper water and the sandies came up again. Sounded reasonable to me. All in all it made for a very nice way to start and end fishing trip.
Best catch of that day for me was at one point when we were grabing sandies my reel backlashed and as I was fixing it my lure sunk to the bottom. Once I got it fixed I got about two cranks on it and felt that mighty tug of a big black swimming off with it. Brought in lazy 4 lbs who was following that school of sandies around scooping up what they killed but didn't manage to swallow off the bottom.

Dennis Christian has a technique that is very productive.
I asked for his help with his above referenced Mepps spinner method.
To his credit, he never hesitated and cheerfully instructed me.
He even climbed into my old bucket of a boat when I was having trouble.
It took about three of his baits (even ran off with his hat once) and quite some time for me to get it down.
All the while he was as patient as Job.
Thanks again Dennis.

Hi Guys!

I watched a few videos on how to use and read my sonar on youtube. Went out on Waco this weekend and tried it out. I turned the fish ID off and turned up the sensitivity. I cannot believe what I have been missing. I marked baot and fish all over the place. It didn't really change my fishing routine much as I fished all of the same places, but I could really see what was going on underneath me. Thanks for all the advice.

BTW, we caught about 20 whites, 4 nice blacks and 6 crappie all when anchored in the same spot. Tons of bait and fish passing by beneath us. Wahoo! tired

Okay here you go (on to the next phase),

Those shallow fish have quit – those Blues are NOW OVER shallow – I hate to see that – but that is over – so what to do next?

Look for them on the humps and underwater points – Right along with all the other fish (Stripers/Hybrids/White Bass and Blues - they all go with the shad), - for the next few weeks (and up till about mid June) – we’ll have those young shad all over the lakes – in what – I call – why are there spots – look under those smalls – and you might see what you are looking for.

Always follow the shad – do not fish just them alone – I look at the electronics and look for the fish we want to catch – but always know where they are (the fish sure know where they go and follow),
