Ok I have a tank on my land that has been stocked only with bass and bluegill. Baitfish for food like flat head minnows I know the bait fish are populateing and I'm sure the bass and bluegill are as well. I do alot of work to maintain it to be my perfect at home get away. Here's my ? I found a local person selling crawfish at a low price and was just woundering if it would be a good idea to put a few dozen in my tank for food so my bass can have a more veriaty but last thing I want is an over populated tank of crawfish that just dig holes. Way do you guys know about crawfish in stock tanks about an acre size?

They won't over populate in a pond filled with bass. The bass will probably eat them as soon as they are stocked. Your fathead minnows won't last long. They are used to jump start the pond when it is first stocked. The forage backbone of the pond will be the bluegill.

Bluegill are for sure the "bread and butter" of raising bass. But like they say, variety is the spice of life. The more forage sources you have the better. If you already have a solid bass population Dave is right, the bass will eat them as soon as they hit the water. If you decide to stock them try to release them into a heavily vegetated area or near some other form of structure.
The biggest benefit of additional forage species is that they will supplement your bass and take pressure off of your Bluegill population. Protecting and helping your bluegill is the best thing you can do for your bass.
Best of Luck!!

I've heard stories that crawfish will make deep tunnels in places you don't want tunnels. Don't know if its true or not...but in a bass pond I doubt they would survive long enough to find out.

If you have some extra money and want to really take the pressure off of your Blue Gill, Get some Tilapia and some Golden Shiners and put them in also. Now is the time of year to stock the Tilapia and they have the extra benefit of feeding on your filamentous algae. Tilapia will spawn several times per summer so you will have lots of nice little Tilapia snacks swimming around for your Bass.

We stocked our lake several times with crawfish..... http://www.lakevilbig.org/stock.htm

I am always finding claws, tails, and parts of their shells in my livewell after our tournaments.

The only problem with Crawfish is their burrows over time can really weaken an earthen dam. If they do survive and populate make sure they don't over populate (much easier said than done) if you have an earthen dam. But if you have a healthy bass population they should control them fine.

My friend bought about 2 dozen alive at the grocery store of all places for his 1.5 acre pond and we never saw one again. Alot of birds, bass, raccoons etc. got em.
