Just bought a castaway Carolina rig special on clearance at academy. Was wondering what gear ratio for flipping and pitching is preferred? Im going to grab a revo sx but noticed it came in 6.4 and 7 to 1.

I'd grab the 7:1. You'll need the burner gear to haul em out of cover! thumb fish

Thanks for the fast reply. Was thinking the same, but ive always just fished worms on a spinning rod, figured it was time for an upgrade.

Once ya get a baitcaster(not sure if you've ever tried one), its hard to go back to a spinning reel! grin

Simple rule of thumb...

5:1 for deep cranks, slow-rolled presentations

6:1 for most applications

7:1 when you want to turn a HEAD quickly

you'll see lots of .2's or .3's. Just an attempt at a better mousetrap.

Either gear ratio will work fine. I try to turn their head at the time of the hook set, and use the gear ratio to winch them in.

Thanks guys. I use baitcasters for mostly spinnerbaits, im not the best caster but i do fine with them. This is the first nice reel ive bought. I have a few abu 5000 series reels that i use for mostly redfish and cats but they dont cut it when trying to throw a lighter lure. Done a bit of research and i hope the combo works out for me.

Different strokes. I want all my reels to be the same ratio. 6.4 would be better for you because you can slow it down enough to fish your spinnerbaits and you can also slow it down enough to fish shallow crankbaits. You lower the effective ratio by putting less line on the spool. FZ1 believes successful bass fishing is primarily the reduction of variables.

Thats a great idea. I already ordered the 7:1 though. Oh well, im looking at getting another rod for cranks and spinners later. Sucks because i lost a ton of tackle and a few rods and reels last year at benbrook lake. Now im in the process of replacing all of that stuff. any suggestions of a good cranking set up?

You need a medium action rod for crankbaits. 6'6" is a good, all around length. Go slow on tackle purchases so you can see what tackle you prefer before each purchase. All of us buy too much stuff,so try to minimize your purchases and buy higher quality with the savings. It doesn't cost anything to retie a different bait on your rod,so you don't need a lot of rods and reels.

When flipin and pitchin I prefer something real fast. When that bass picks up your jig you have to be able to smack him quick before he drops it, if your reel is a slow ratio then you can't be quick enough to get a good hook set. Plus if you ever have one pick it up and come toward the boat, you need something that you can take up the slack real quick.

yeah i hear that, i can make do with what i have at the moment. Just looking for down the road. I want to fish with the revo for a while and see how it acts before i go out and buy another, also money is kinda tight for more fishing stuff at the moment so it will be a couple months before i get anything else. We are redoing the decks, floors, seats, and carpet in the boat right now too. Thanks for all the info.
