I'm scared to death to fish a jig. I have no one really to teach me how to do it, and I dont want to spend countless hours practicing the wrong way. I dont even know what a jig bite feels like. Can anyone help?
I need advice on where to fish a jig? How to fish a jig? What colors work where? And what the heck does a jig bite feel like? (is it a tap tap tappy, or just pressure on the end of the line?)
I feel like a jerk asking these questions, but from what I have read, the jig is one of the most versitle baits in the world (Ive even heard that alot of anglers if asked what one bait they had to fish with the rest of their lives would be a jig.
Help a brother out!
The road goes on forever and the party never ends...

1. where-ledges, points, bluffs...pretty much anywhere 2. retrieve-slow drag, hop it or stroke a jig(pop it off the bottom), or flip it in grass or against trees(you will get hung up in trees). 3. Colors-match the hatch. try to find out what kind of craws there are around the lakes your fishing. grn pumkin and black work pretty good for me. 4. the bite-sometimes its a tell-tale tap, other times they hit it on the fall(flippin and pitchin) and others its a feeling of pressure where there should be none. Hope this helps, I just went out and took 3-4 rods all rigged with jigs to learn.

No need to fear the jig, just start using it. It will catch bass in any depth and any season. It's a versatile bait and can be fished fast ,slow or anywhere in between. Swim it, crawl it, hop it, shake it, rip it off the bottom, dead stick it or any combination of these will work at times. If you fish a t-rig much the bites will feel similar. Sometimes they crush it and sometimes you just sense something is there. There are days when they won't have anything to do with it and other days when it rocks. If you are going to develop confidence in it you just have to stick with it and learn when those times are likely to occur.

My only advice would be to just fish it, 'not over complicate' it. Think about what you are trying to imitate, keep the colors simple, and be patient. Keep it in the water, Best luck. This guy knows something about jig fishing, might help you get started. http://www.insideline.net/1999/cuccia-0910-99.html

I consider myself to be a heck of a fisherman and while I only fish 3 clubs tourney's. Nothing like FLW or Bass Champs. Lord my wife would kill me if she saw me pay those entry fees. I've never fished a tounament and not cut a check. That said; I'm in the same boat as our brother here. I have had only 3 fish on a jig. 1 of them was at Falcon on a pre-fish day and it was 6.2. The others were better than average fish that I was catching those days. My key to learning the jig bite is this. I fish a lot and can put 5 fish together real quick using my other baits and techniques. I need this weapon in my tool box because there have been a lot of tournaments where I scratched a 3rd or 4th place check with the difference of a about a pound between me and 1st.

I'm still tring to learn how to fish the jig also. Every time I go out I try fishing with it most of the time. I just use diff jig colors untill I get a bite. I've had them run with it and just pick it up. Still hard to get to know when a fish is on it. Just take practice.

I fish a jig a lot like a tx rig. I will fish it in timber or grass if I'm looking for a bigger bite than the tx rig is producing, or I will fish it on deep structure. Use a flipping jig for cover, and a football for open water. Stick with natural colors, watermelon, grn pumpkin, pb&j, brown and orange, or black/blue. I like Paca Chunks or Chigger Craws for trailers.
To me, the bite feels similar to a tx rig. Sometimes you will feel the thump, other times the fish will be there when you pick it up.

1+ on alot like a texas rig. My opinion, you arent going to get as many bites on a jig as say a t-rig worm, I like to find a concentration of fish with another bait and then start throwing a jig. If you are in a tourney or fishing a lake known to have big fish, you have to bring the jig.
few quick tips:
use pure flouro line deeper the water, heavier the jig Colors-clear water- green pumpkin, pumpkinseed,brown... no rattles with small trailer stained water-watermelon, watermelon greenpumpkin, black n blue (all w rattles heavily stained- black n blue, purple, black n chartruese(all w rattles)
trim the skirt just below the hook, small trailers for clear water, big bulky trailers for cold (to slow the fall and real pork is the best for this) and stained to muddy water.
these are general rules of thumb i use but by no means absolute.
main thing is give it a try!
good luck
