It is an Arowana and from the looks of pictures it had hole in the head disease. You can tell by the holes in the bottom lip and cand kind of see them on the head I had one years back and it got hole in the head disease from feeding it minnows. After many water treatments to cure this it ultimately died. Looks like someone didn't want to deal with it and put it in the pond. Very sad. Thought the "hole in head" syndrome was due to a fish not having enough room in the tank?

Feeding your aquar fish contaminated live feeders can also cause HITH

Larry, You are correct. I had a 115 gallon tank and kept it super clean. I only had 2 other fish in it at the time. My Oscar and Arowana got HITH, but my catfish (tigrinus) did not. Catfish looked like this one Sad to see those guys go. Learned my lesson about feeding them feeder fish from petsmart.

Never buy feeders from a pet store. It is best to breed your own feeders from guppies and mollies, or go to your local body of water and catch some mosquito fish or any other bait fish.
Life is a beach, i'm just playing in the sand.

I gave two of those to the dallas aquarium about 15 years ago (30" long) and they were thrilled to get them. By the way, I don't think you would have to worry about them taking over, they are not nearly as aggressive as a bass or perch.
