Im thinking of going there to kayak, camp, and fish. Would like to know more about the river. Is the river area near the park nice? On southwest paddler there is lots of info and they say the river is really clear there. I normally do weekend trips of 2 days. I was thinking of either camping at colorado bend state park and just paddling up stream and around the park or maybe putting in at sulphur springs camp area and paddling the 8-9 miles to colorado bend state park and camping over night along the way. We can have two vehicles to do this so portage isnt an issue. I have read there are lots of water falls up there in that area and the water is supposed to be really clean and cool. And its only 3 hours from Dallas.

We went 4 weeks ago and stayed at Sulpher Springs Camp and paddled down the the state park. I think it cost 3 or four dollars to park at the state park. The river was flooding that weekend and the water was very muddy so fishing was poor. It should be alot better if they haven't had any rain lately.

From what I can tell its a very clean and clear river when it isnt raining. Of course rain will foul any river up with mud. any other details? Pictures?

No pictures. I forgot to take my camera. Hopefully I will get back there when the water is clear. One of the guys I was with had set his gear on the river bank at Sulpher Springs camp. While we were gone to shuttle a truck down to the state park, the river came up enough that he lost his tackle box.
I hope you have a good trip and let us know how you do.

Dave;
We go to CB each year for the white bass run. The campground can be very crowded and is very popular with the boy scouts. We always camp in the river primitive area and you can find some solitude there. You can put in at the ramp or at the trail head and paddle upstream to the primitive area. You can't see the primitive sites from the river so you will have to check your gps for distance or have someone hike in first. The good sites are only a mile from the trailhead.
The paddle down river towards Lake Buchanan is a pretty one and the springs and waterfalls are not very far past the state park. They are flowing nicely this year with all the rain.
I have never fished the area outside of the white bass run so I can't help you out there. We flyfish so even when the sandies are running we fish different areas.
I'm going to send you a PM ...I want to pick your brain on the Brazos ...got a trip planned in a couple of weeks.

Sorry for not being clear. No they do not have a shuttle service. We drove two trucks down and dropped one off and drove back up to Sulphur Springs and floated back down to the state park.
