Anyone tried trolling the upper end of the lake or mouth of the river yet, near Crane's mill park?

I'm thinking of giving it a try this friday. If they are there I should find them. Usually the peach tree blooms mean the run is on, but I'm thinking it's still a little early, and the warm weather has got the peach trees and me confused!

When the run is about to start, Cranes Mill pier is great...but can get very crowded. You can also go to Rebecca creek boat ramp and walk along the banks. As for the Guad., try the 4th crossing on River road...could catch a nice rainbow!

Also, Jimbo, I fished Cranes Mill pier twice this past week. Only caught 3 small whites, 2 good whites, and a handful of smaller crappie. Did catch a nice yellow cat on large minnow...almost 8 lbs. I will be there again in the morning, but have had a little better luck at night under my green light. I give it another two weeks and they'll be there thick!!! Love that run...

Thanks Naggler: That is exactly what I was wanting to hear. Sounds like they are in the area.

Russell: Naggler is right on about fishing from that pier. It's probably the best spot when you don't have a boat. Also if you have military connections, you can try the pier at the Ft. Sam Houston retreat near the dam. Always a good spot to catch fish!

If you fish the 4th crossing of the Guadalupe remember it is in the trophy trout area. That means one trout 18" or more per day. Unless you catch realease. Also only artificial lures or flies.

Keep in mind that fishing the 4th crossing of the Guad is within the trophy trout area. That means only 1 trout over 18" per day using flies or artificial lure-unless you just catch release.

Ditto Karen...forgot about that. Last time I fished there was during the heat of the summer, and I caught 6 species of fish including one rainbow that was over 20 inches. Great fight on a tiny spinning combo.
And yes, Jimbo...there coming!! In the past two or three weeks they have slowly trickled into that end of the lake and the numbers are steadily rising according to the regulars at the pier. I don't have a real boat, but I just bought a one man, inflatable pontoon boat with trolling motor. Can't wait to go jiggin off Cranes Mill with it! Soon...very soon...

Well, I've got a 21 ft. bass boat with all the bells and whistles, but spent an unGodly amount of money on ultra light gear at Cabela's. I really need to start using it. My biggest fear is all the underwater timber that I've heard about in and around the Crane's Mill area as well as the mouth of the Guad. I live on the south side of the lake, so I'm only about 5-7 minutes away from Crane's Mill. I will try and get out there once I can get a good navigator to help me steer clear of the rocks. On yeah, spent some money on some of those underwater green lights, too. I'm telling ya, I'm going to be one overtime working fool once they open up BPS by my work. Steven: It's not that bad, and besides, if your not hanging up, your probably fishing in the wrong spot.
Seriously though, the key is to get out and learn the lake by fishing it. Once you make a couple trips, everything else is icing on the cake.

The easiest way to learn a lake is to break it down into smaller sections. Learn one area really well, and you will become consistent at catching fish from that area. Then try other areas of the lake with similar features and apply the same techniques, and soon you'll have your "go to" spots that you have confidence in.

The area immediately around cranes mill and back out into the main lake is fine, it is once you make the turn heading back upriver that you need to be cautious about the submerged timber. I was there a few weeks ago from Rebecca Creek back down and due to the low water level at the time it was highly advisable to go nice and slow, but as long as you are being sensible and paying attention you should be fine.

Jimbo, scroll back a page or two and look for King Bingo's report. If memory serves, he trolled the upper end one day last week and caught one white and one LMB.

yeah this is the right time of year, but wrong weather. if it was about 30-40 degrees and foggy you'd have your limit in no time flat. just wait in about 3 weeks we're gonna have an ice storm and the fishing should really pick up.

could you imagine being out there today? you'd need hand grenades and a dip net...

i hope we get some rain so the well starts pumping again... the whites get in there pretty good sometimes.

Didn't risk making the trip this morning. I read and heard the weather report and the high winds and decided not to chance it. Looked like the wind didn't hit until around 10 but that wouldn't have given me much time anyway. Going to have to try it another day, when things settle down.

Went to Cranes Mill Thursday for about eight hours and caught 7 small crappie, 2 keepers, and a small LMB. As for whites...nada. Even under my green light. Couple weeks and a good northern...
