Is there anything special about operating a gel Battery for
eng Starting, Do I need a special charger or are they charged
by a regular 10Amp Battery charger, and is there anything
for special care that is needed. Thanks

A good charger is always important. Most of the onboard chargers work well. Saving a few dollars on a charger doesn't really make sense after spending quite a bit on Gel or AGM batteries.

I have a two bank XPS 10/10 from Bass Pro that's worked great for about a year now. It's $149.95. Prior to that the boat came with another 2 bank 10 amp charger from ProMariner. Bass Pro sells it also. It went south after about a year. I had the same charger ProMariner Charger in my Bay Boat for 2 years. The first one went out after a year. The second was still good when I sold the boat.

Distributed is good. That way if you have 20 amps total and one battery is more discharged it gets a stronger charge. Also lots of chargers have special charging profiles specific to Gel or AGM batteries.

Amp rating is dependent on how short of a period you want to charge your batteries, how many amp hours your batteries are and how discharged they are. I have 100 amp hr Sears Diehards. So far the XPS 10/10 will fully charge them over night. But I just got those Sear batteries. Prior to that I had 80 amp hour Interstate batteries. They were always fully charged in the morning.

BPS has 151 reviews on the XPS 20. It only scores a 3.5 out of 5. After a year I would give it a 5 out of 5. It just needs to last over time. If I get 5 years out of it I will be happy.

A straight 10 amp changer likely won't charge two very drained larger amp hour batteries over night.

One thing I did when I mounted my new charger is to raise it up 1/4" off the floor to get air flow under it. This helps it cool better. Heat is never good for a charger.

Fishspanker covered it all, but I would emphasize that gel cell batteries do require a lower charge rate. Using a regular charger without a gel cell setting will can premature failure. Gel cells are being replaced by agm batteries, which are the best available according to many experts.

I use a 5 amp MK charger for my AGMs. Charges up my Optima 31 in 1-2 hours.

At what rate is this type of battery supposed to be charged,
I do not have onboard charging system, nor do I have room to
put one.

My Vector charger has settings for wet, gel and agm. I do not know if the difference is just charge rate, or more complex. Safest way would be to get a charger like the Vector, IMO.
