Ever try Cream of Mushroom soup for the gravy? I used to brown some hamburger, season it, make some rice and pour it over the HB then add a can of the Mushroom soup. Warm it up in the microwave at work and it was good on a cold day.
To make SOS I have always browned the meat then scooped it into a bowl and added some flour and milk to the left over fat in the pan til I had a gravy made it. Made some tasty gravy.
Mom always served it over toast.
She made Dad chipped beef gravy which is thin deli sliced beef chopped up and mixed with a cream gravy.Just don't remember how she made the gravy.
That is about all I remember about SOS.

Maybe it's just me, but that recipe sounds too nice for it to be "true" SOS. You gotta truely bring out the first name. Fry up 1 lb hamburger, take hamburger out of pan, leave grease. Add enough flour to grease to soak it all up, add enough milk to fill skillet 2/3 of the way up. Mash flour pellets until they've disolved, until it boils, readd hamburger, cook till it thickens, pour over some sort of bread.

Don't post much but have to share this.
Once a week breakfast
After spending many many years in the Marine Corps, I go into withdrawal if I dont have this at least once a week.
Put breakfast sausage (your choice) in a pan with a little bit of butter and brown. Once it is brown, but not yet completely done. Add a little bacon dripping or oil if needed. Then you can use flour or Tony Chacheres white gravy mix. I buy by the case at Bass Pro. Cover the meat and stir making sure the meat if totally covered. Now add milk or cream depending on your preference. If you use flour you will need to add a little salt, gravy mix doesnt need additional salt. Then add cracked pepper to taste, I use a lot. Stir everything real good. Bring mixture to a boil, reduce to low and stir occasionally until everything else is done. For this breakfast I make my gravy thicker than I do when putting on toast.
Peel a nice potato (your choice) then grate into hash browns, then rinse and dry. Chop up some onion and mix with potatoes. Put a little butter & salt in the pan. Put the potatoes in and cook until golden brown on both sides.
Chopped up some ham and cook to your liking in a little butter, I cook mine just enough to get a little brown on it and put to the side.
Crack 3 eggs in a bowl and add salt to taste and whip with a fork. Put a little butter in an omelet pan. Add eggs, cheese of choice and ham to complete you omelet to your liking. When the omelet is about done place hash browns on a big plate or platter. Next put the omelet on top of the hash browns and then cover it all with gravy mixture. I normally like to add a couple of slices of toast with butter and jalapeno jelly and a big cup of coffee. Once done eating find a comfortable chair and wait and hour or two before trying to move around much! J
** Warning ** This can be addictive, but must only be consumed no more than once a week :-))))))))))
Take Care, BE SAFE and GOOD FISHING!!!
Chuck

like so many have said already, I grew up on the stuff. Granny made it 2 or 3 times a week. I have fixed it a couple of times for my two kids and they won't touch it Kids these days are spoiled and don't know what good groceries taste like.
