I have a 1969 Evinrude 40hp Electric Shift outboard model 40972R. I have a few questions for anyone knowledgeable on vintage motors.
1. Where can I find used vintage outbaord parts for this motor, such as a generator and generator bracket (the one on my motor is missing).
2. Does this motor use fuel/oil mixture or is it supposed to have an oil resivoir (I can't find one and most places can't seem to get me the info). If it is fuel/oil mixture, what is the ratio, 50:1?
3. On the exhaust plate, there is a spot under the heat exchanger tube that looks just like that port. Is it supposed to have a line going to it just like the heat exchanger tube at the top or is it supposed to be plugged (it is just an open port waiting for a plug or a tube to be screwed in to it.) I will post a pic tomorrow of the place I am talking about.
Any leads or help would be greatly appreciated.

Check out Evinrude's website. I found a piece by piece diagram when I rebuilt the lower unit on my 82, I found your engine on there as well. after the main page go to "parts" and work the drop downs till you find your. It helped me a bunch. You should be able to get any replacment part you want as well. Couldnt find the Ratio info though.

Your motor does not have a separate tank for oil. It requires pre-mixed fuel, 50:1. The hydro-electric shift motors are getting hard to find some parts for, those that generally relate to the drive unit. Most electrics, carb parts are still readily avaialble. There are lot's of sources of used parts on the internet, just search using google. Make sure you use the proper lube in the lower unit, Evinrude/Johnson Premium Blend or else it will not shift properly and make sure you don't have any water leaks or water in the lower unit. They are generally pretty reliable and work quite well. I have owned one of these for a while and have found them to be quite reliable.

I have two 1971 model Johnson lower units with electric shift. The hardest thing to locate is the micro switch located in the remote shift box.....$300 bucks for a new one...ouch. I had to wire arounfd it with two external switches.
