I posted this in a different section and did not get much response so I will try again here. On topwater baits when switching to single hooks how should they be installed? When looking at the bait from the side should both baits be installed with the point towards the back of the bait or what? Last year I did this to be able to fish the topwater when there was a lot of floating grass. The topwater was getting much bigger fish but I was missing a ton with the single hooks. Im ok with that but got to thinking maybe I did not install the hooks facing the correct direction. I know you miss the most fish on a topwater vs. other baits but with the single hooks it went way up. What do you experts think? Thanks in advance.

From experience, if you have the hook facing forward around any kind of floating trash (grass, algae, etc.) you are going to have your lure all mucked up all the time.

Has to be pointing backward, and yes, you may lose some hooksets.
But if the lure is clogged up all the time, there will never be anything on which to need to set a hook anyway.

So what I have done on many of my own...I attained several sizes of double hooks. These point toward the back, but each hook offsets somewhat to the opposite side.

I cannot describe, but you can look them up. Eagle Claw and Mustad both have them available.

Next time you have that problem,switch to a 4/0 or 5/0 Weedless Hook,5 to 7 inch Plastic"Jerkbait",Texas-Rig that sucker and insert the loudest rattle you can put in it;Walk-the-Dog,Suspended,on the bottom.......No clogging,snagging(Grass) what so ever.

I may try that. What jerk bait do you like and where can I get the rattle? Academy?

Front hook facing forward, back hook facing back. I have completely casted onto shore on salt grass and pull it out every time with no snags.

1/0 goes in back, 2/0 goes in front. The smaller hook in the back loosens the back end up more.

I saw Jose Wajebe of Spanish Fly outdoor program change hooks on a Zara Spook some years ago. He cut all 3 barbs off of the lead hook and replaced the trailing hook with a single the same size as the treble. This maintained the balance that was engineered into the bait. It also provided a great handle to hoist the fish with. Great tip.
