I started fishing frogs years ago but really got into it this year. What in you guys opinion makes a good frog rod? Stiff fast action or a more parabolic action? Power? Length? Thanks for comments

fast shut off, and lots of backbone. i like heavy rod for frogging. it also has to be lightweight.. nobody likes throwin a telephone pole all day!

Right but are we talking 5 power 7-7 1/2 rod? What is the purpose of such a big rod? I use a powell 705cef and it seems to work good.

I prefer the longer rod because,

Makes me feel like i have more leverage against a fish when i make such a long cast over a lilly pad field.

I feel as if i can make much longer casts with a long rod.

I personally believe the longer the rod, obviously the higher you can keep the rod tip, on long casts this helps me keep the frog up on top where it needs to be.

also feel as if the longer rod helps me alot more with the little things.

You also want one with a strong backbone for those long distance hooksets. You dont want the fish to be able to take you under the stems and start weaving before your MH action rod kicks in for the set. This is where braid also helps pick up the slack.
I use anything between 7' and 7'8"
Would probably even throw an 8'er if i owned one.

I agree with this statement.

yes braid braid braid

If your throwing it on 17 your not fishing pads or matted grass.

That is when the super heavy rods, and braid is needed. When your chunking a frog deep into pads. You need to be able to get em out. You aint doin that with 17 lb line.
Now if your only fishing open water. All that power is not nessiary

i asked this same question in a post a few days ago...... there are two issues here. one is fishing frogs on mats and lilly pads where yes, a big heavy long rod and heavy braid makes sense, but when you move to skipping them under overhanging trees, docks and bushes, you need more of the parabolic "whipping" action to get the frog back deep in the cover.

I am fishing it in grass with 17 so yes i can use 17 lb test in grass.. But I agree it is to light. In grass i am not as worried as I would be in pads. I will be switching to braid though.

At least 50lb braid, at least a 7' rod with BACK BONE. Then all thats left to do is put the hammer down on em!
