Depends on what you are fishing for and how you like to fish. I think everyone will give different answers. Some like to throw arties at trout when the water gets green. others rig heavy and use big baits for sharks.
I prefer an all around method that allows me to catch a wide variety of species. I use a double drop leader with 5/0 circle hooks and a 3 or 4 oz stainless spider weight. Any rod that I can put a large spinnning reel on that will hold alot of 50 lb test power pro. Use cut bait, Fresh dead shrimp, live finger mullet etc. cast out in a good spot and stick 4 rods in rebar rod holders. Crack open a beer and hopefully fill an icechest with a variety of good eating fish. Tides are a big part of fishing in and around the pass.

Yes sir, this is how I do it. this is what i do, cast out a 10ft surf rod bait with cut mullet or whiting and set in 4ft pvc pipe rod holder thats in the sand and then use another rod of your pick to catch trout or other fish. Take 2 10' rods and throw them out - soaking bait. Take 2 7', I prefer spincast, and fish the gut - artificials.

9 - 10 ft rod, 50 - 65lb powerpro yellow 3 - 4oz spider sinker, maybe larger, 2 - 3ft leader (preferably 80 - 100 lb test, I personally use 80lb malin single stranded, seems quite thin but that's just me, just don't trust the crimp sleeves) 11/0 - 12/0 circle hooks, academy has a pack of 25 for like 8 bucks. Got my 5/0 straightened out by some monster the other time so I decided to size up. hook in half a croaker and shoot for the horizon

Just moved to Houston and drove down to Surfside for the first time yesterday to look around. Beaches seemed more open and less congested than Galveston. Surf was pretty rough though. Dirty for the first 40-50 yards out then cleaner water. Walked the length of the jetty and no one was catching anything. Is there a better area around Surfside to surf fish? Is the jetty better than the surf?

I fish Surfside all the time. I prefer the surf because the jetty gets way too crowded! However when there's too much jellyfish you won't catch my tail out there.

I drove about a mile along the beach )going East away from the jetty) and it all looked the same to me. Nice that there were not loads of people out but I wish I could tell a good spot from a bad spot. If you fish surfside all the time, what do you fish with when surf fishing? Big waves make it look hard fo fish with anything other than bigger, heavier baits, i.e. cut bait /heavy sinkers. Also, is Memorial Day weekend (Sunday) going to be absolutely nuts around SS? We havev friends visiting from Dallas and I thought I would take them down there for the day. Thanks for the help!

For Memorial Day I'd rather go there than anywhere close to Galveston. Just too many MS-13 wannabes hanging out there ruining the atmosphere. Freeport will be packed too. Honestly if you wanted a weekend trip I'd head to North Padre island.
For surf fishing I don't even bother if it's rough. You spend the whole day getting bashed by waves and can barely cast. Just look at the surf cams before you go. I fish with gulp shrimp under a popping cork or on a jig head 90% of the time. But of course real shrimp will work better.

I hear you on Padre but I only have Sunday to get these Dallas friends out for the day. We'll be coming back to Houston on Sunday night. I gues I will try to get to Surfside early to stake out a spot.....any recommendations on what part of the beach I should shoot for? Do I need a beach permit of any kind? Any recommendations on a bar/restaurant we can eat at? We stopped and ate at a place called Hammerhead bar this weekend...not great.
