It seems pretty confusing, they now have an insight card that you can buy for the base map units or you can use your navionics card, kinda seems like the insight unit is not needed unless you travel all over the US. I ended up with the base map and I will check out the new cards that are supposed to be out this month.

Does the Basemap have contours?

It does but not detailed at all. Best to get a Navionics chip. I agree that Insight is not worth it and I have turned it off on my unit.

What I find very good on basemap is underwater sturcture like dams, bridges house foundation etc. Much better then Navionics for stuff like that at least at the lakes I fish.

Hmm... I have not seen any of those on my HDS-7... I guess I'll have to play around with it a little.

You may not have Insight, that's an extra, but I'm pretty sure you have basemap. It's a choice on your menu screen when you have your map on. I forget what exactly it is, but there's a drop down menu where you select what mapping software to display.

Yeah, I bought it second-hand. I switched it from "Navionics" to "Lowrance". Was told it had the Basemaps. I can see the lakes, just no contours.

I'm not fishing tonight, so I'll play with it when I get home.

Insight is more accurate than Navionics for structure as mentioned above.

You pay $160 or so for Insight but you'll never use if you buy the Navionics chip. Navionics if far more detailed with much better contour lines.

Navionics is more detailed on contour lines, but I can tell you on numerous occasions that finding for example, old pond dams, the lake insight map is MUCH more accurate. Therefore, I use both.

Used Navionics this past week to mark creek bends on a Okla. lake, While leaving I zoomed out,It showed the marks I made were about 20 feet up on the bank.

insight is good if you fish around the country as it has lake detail throughout......if you just fish around texas....save your money and buy a good navionics card for your area.
