[referring to crappie fishing only]
I have been fishing over the years with my father, and he swears by cottonseed cake. I haven't really noticed a difference, and lately it seems that when we bait out a hole, the fish don't bite after baiting it!
We have fished the hole the same day, next day, and no real results.
I am beginning to think that the crappie are getting all their feeding done from the minnows and shad that gather and won't feed anymore. Is there any reason that one of us right? Some light on the issue would be appreciated, because we just wanna catch fish!

Thanks, Fishluvme; on one hand, I hear that it is good from a bunch of folks-which makes me think it works, but on the other hand my experiences (10 times or so) do not live up to the expectations.
I can tell by these forums and pictures that cottonseed cake is not nearly as important as knowing the lake and finding the spots!

To me...Water temperature, wind, vegetation, water depth, water color, wood stick condominiums and Christmas trees are more important. ![thumb thumb](/forums/images/graemlins/default/cup.gif)

I would say cotton seed cake might bring them in from a certain distance, but if they aren't in that distance it isn't going to help. You'd be better off finding the fish IMO.

When I was a kid back in the 40's and 50's, my dad use to bait fish baskets (they were legal at the time) with cottonseed cakes, and we caught all the catfish that we could haul off. As for baiting a crappie area with cottonseed cakes; IMO you're asking for all the cats, carp, buffalo, etc in the area to 'come on in'. This subject comes up about a dozen times a year on here, and the answer is still the same....never bait a crappie hole, because you don't need to as long as you have put a brushpile down.

A good brushpile is self-baiting.
