my motor was running rough toward the end of the day when i went to get on plane the last time it would barley get up so i limped it in. i did a compression check when i got home 5 cyl read 122-128 #3 cyl reads 17. the motors a 1998 merc 150 xr6. its never given me any problems before today and ran fine this morning. how hard are these motors to rebuild and what the cost ive came up with every where from 500 3500. im open to any and all suggestions at this point. sorry for the confusing post im still alittle sick at my stomach.

Rebuilding could be cheap,or expensive. Depends on what failed. If you broke a ring, could be bad. Maybe just a stuck ring.
Best of luck to you.

At 17 LBs...I can almost promise you it isnt just a stuck ring. ( sorry). You are looking at a new piston and a bore job more than likely. But it's not the end of the world. In most cases, it CAN be fixed, if you didnt burn the crank or sling a rod through the block.
One of the first things you need to do is to take it to a mechanic you trust and get it evaluated. Let him look at it and give you his best guess, without tearing it down first.
Now, Donald...please pick John Bolton for your running mate.

Thought that said 107. Not 17. Forget the stuck ring idea.

Should be easy enough to pull the head and inspect the damage.

I'm doing a V-6 Merc XR6, all six holes, complete for $1900. If that fits in your budget, call me, a few hundred dollars is worth the price of gas to get here. (512)353-1854

Just went through it last fall. broke a ring. ended up boring block, replacing all 6 pistons and rods. It's expensive, but you either bite the bullet or do woithout. good luck on your choice.

Take it to Mike period. Just getting to be too many unrelyable boat repair people and shops around.

Pistons are what will run the cost up and some reason the port sides (I believe) are higher. Call D&B in Duncanville. David works primarily on Mercs and Nissans. He is Nissan certified and went to Merc school. He is a good guy and will take care of you. Here are his numbers: 972-223-2781 972-243-6882. I tried to get him on this forum but he is not much in to computers and just works off of word of mouth. When he was Harry Hines I used to go down to shop during lunch once or twice a week.
