at Bob Sandlin.

My dad and my daughter went out in the shallows at Bob Sandlin this morning. We did okay on channels, but caught two bowfin (first I'd ever seen).

I didnt know if they were good eating or not, so I filleted both of them. The meat feels a little tough and silky texture. I didnt find any "pinbones" like there are in carp, etc....

Anyone know if they taste decent?

I ate em all the time in south GA. It's great meat. Alot like catfish in texture, just a little bit more soft. No extra bones. Great eating.

I'd ask the same question in the Rough Fish section.

I come from a family that would eat just about anything, but we tried bowfin (grinnel) once and took it off the menu forever.

Here is a link to the definitive site for bowfin anglers. It should clear up most questions related to catching and eating bowfin.

http://www.bowfinanglers.com/

Hope this helps

I guess they're OK to eat when it's early in the year and the water isn't warmed up fully, but man... I grew up fishing with the Red Man on Walpole island in Lk. St. Clair, we ate everything, but bowfin are the very last fish I'll eat now. They are best put back to catch and fight another day.

There's a reason you never hear anyone rave about how good they are to eat.
