Maybe someone here can answer this one. Is a PFD required in Texas when fishing from a tube in public waters? If that is the case then why is it not required for all the people that rent tubes from a river outfitter to float down the river and drink beer?

Going by memory but I think it's only if you're motorized.

I agree with Samsonsworld. Its not to smart to go out without one at least in reach. I tubed for years and didnt think about it until I had a tube spring a leak when fusing in late February. I did make it to shore but make me think of what cold have been. I toon now and even when I dont take my trolling motor I have a PFD.

From the TPWD website:
"All vessels under 16 feet (including canoes and kayaks) must be equipped with one Type I, II, III or V for each person on board."

I know it doesnt say float tube but go to Benbrook and the warden will let you know, lol! Have one available but it is not a requirement to wear one.

Maybe a donut float tube is not considered a vessel or IS considered PFD itself, as it is NOT enforced on the Guadalupe. OTOH they consider exposed foam illegal. http://www.riversportstubes.com/Guadalupe_and_Comal_River_Rules.htm Figure that one out.

According to Webster:
vessel : a watercraft bigger than a rowboat

....but then TWPD sure seems to use that term loosely.

I didn't want a TPWD slam session, just thoughts on the issue. Think if i go out I'll just take one.

That's what I would do. You never know, when you are in 20-30 foot of water just what may happen. I fish alot better when I feel most secure. Just not worth the risk. I have never been checked by the warden, but that is the least of my worries. I take alot of risks, just not the pfd thing. It's not about a ticket, it's about me.
