Been calling the smaller white birds that group together like gulls "Liar Birds". Does anyone know their real name? Heard some say they are called "Liar Birds" because they don't always dive on shad like gulls are known to do. Is this true?popcorn2

Terns...Terns have a shorter wing span and a longer beak, normally the beak orange in color. Typically they will "dive bomb" prey by folding their wings and plunging into the water.

They are also known to frequently "skim" the water scooping up food.

When they are "dive bombing" they are nearly 100% of the time feeding on shad....where there is shad being pushed to the surface there may be fish.

When they are "skimming" the surface, spread over a larger area just "milling around".....that's where they get the name Liar Bird.

They didn't really lie, some people just mis-interpret what they are saying. LOL

A bag of potato chips crushed and sprinkled on the water will turn ALL birds into liar birds....quite comical at times.

small white birds with sharp pointed beeks. Yes!

also their wings r shaped kinda like that of a chimney sweep. rare that i find shad being pushed up under these birds.

There are lots of signs on the water in the form of birds....loons, gulls, terns, water turkeys, pelicans, ducks, coots, egrets, blue herons....they all mean something and at certain times they will all point the way to fish, don't rule any of them out at face value. You just have to learn which actions are "fishy" and which ones aren't.
