Just moved to San Antonio and need to find some spots to go bass fishing. I have a little bass buster boat w/ outboard, so I like a launch where I can spend a little bit of time setting up w/out creating a big line. I was thinking about Canyon - but not sure if all the ramps are usable now? Or I might head to Dunlap? Any others I should check out? I don't hear much about the bass fishing on Brauning/Calaveras. I will also be heading to town lake in Austin bc it is perfect for my boat, but I wanted to find a lake closer where I could run the outboard.

Thanks, Jon

Man if I lived in San Antonio I'd be going to Amistad every weekend. Put a beefy trolling motor on the buster boat and scoot west on 90.

If ur desire is to run the outboard, braunig and calaveras will work. If you want to catch LMB, don't waste much time there or at Canyon for that matter. Honestly there isn't much close that interests me. I've never fished Dunlap, and McQueeney has some rediculous boat ramp issue now. Canyon and McQueeney are party lakes and the punks out there will drive you nuts. Calaveras has Reds and Stripers that you can get into good if you do your time there and figure them out. Braunig is worthless as far as I'm concerned. I usually make a drive pretty far out to Choke Canyon, Fayette County, Bastrop, Falcon or Amistad. You might not want to think about putting a little boat into Choke, Falcon or Amistad unless the weather is cooperating or you really know what your doing. I haven't fished town lake. Medina Lake is close as well, but since I've lived here, It's been Up and down like a yo-yo. Last I knew it was down 40 feet. All this ran may help, but you probably know what that does to a lake. Good luck.

Welcme to San Antonio. I moved to San Antonio a couple years ago and have found good bass fishing at most lakes that I've been to.

Canyon would be a good lake to go to. I don't think you should have a problem launching at Canyon Lake now that it is full of water. I know there has been construction in the Cranes Mill area and I don't believe that ramp is open. I've recently launched my boat at Potter's Creek and Mystic Shores (County ramp 23) without any trouble.

Dunlap would be another good option.

I fish Medina regularly because it is about half the distance as Canyon from my house. Medina can be a good lake for numbers of 11"-13" LMB with occasional larger bass.

Choke Canyon, Amistad and Falcon are some of the best bass lakes in the nation and all are a reasonable distance from San Antonio.

The recent rains have some of the lakes rising a foot or more a day right now. Check current conditions before heading out. Canyon is already full of water and would be a safe choice for a trip this weekend.

If you waste as much time as I have on this website it won't take you long to figure out some fishing opportunities around San Antonio. The Texas Parks and Wildlife website can also be helpful for learning general information about area lakes. You will find more up to date information on this website though.
Here's a link you might find helpful.

Some add ons:
- I have a 50# trolling motor already for the boat, just got the outboard for getting me to the fishing spots.
- I have been fishing TX b4 but mainly around Austin, i.e. town/bastrop
- I know how good choke, Amistad, Falcon are - just not for my boat, though I heard something about fishing the river on choke?

Thanks for all the info - keep it coming, Jon
