Waste of fish - It is unlawful to leave edible fish or bait fish taken from the public waters of the state to die without the intent to retain the fish for consumption or bait.

if the truth was known, this law prolly came about because dead rough fish lined the banks where a lot of people fished every day ... it was originally a litter problem ... matter of fact, where FM 600 crosses stamford lake, there were so many rough fish all along the guard rail & even out on the pavement, the game warden started writing tickets for littering ... this was late 80's/early 90's ... i'm purty sure the above law had not been passed at this time

long as i can remember, you thru all rough fish out on the bank period ... just a common practice ... if you released rough fish you were the weird one ... my how the tables have turned & we even have a law to make you comply ... but it's called progress

late 70's early 80's there were attempts to clean out most (if not eradicate) carp & such from many lakes ... i remember netters being hired to set gill nets in stamford lake & their goal was to take out as many rough fish as possible ... not to mention the rough fish tourneys where several thousand pound of mainly carp & buffs were caught & discarded ... a lot of you here were not even alive when this was happening grin

all you know is how terribly wrong it was

catfishing is now an industry ... it's best for the industry to eat baby catfish

I have never heard anyone say that gar was bad after eating it.... I personally wouldnt want to clean one though.

I don't know about bait, but those rough fish do a pretty good job of pushing up maters when you bury them in your garden.
