Considering an F250 diesel vs. gas .. would really like the torque and fuel milage of a diesel, but of course more $$$ for the diesel. Anyone out there have a F250 with a Triton V10 ? I really hope they're not a total gas sucking pig ...

I have the F250 v-10 gas. I get about 12mpg even while towing. The only change from factory setup is K and N air filter. Good luck.

I have a 2004 F-250 Crew Cab with the small 5.4L V-8. I wanted the Diesel but couldn't absorb the extra $5000 hit up front. I get 14 MPH around town, and got 21 on my first road trip not pulling the boat. When I pull my boat (20' Skeeter) at 70MPH with overdrive disabled I get 10 MPG. With my boat if I can stand to drive slower, like low 60's, it pushes 12 MPG. My guess is the bigger V8 will be less in all categories.

buy a used '02 or earlier dodge diesel. i got mine (4x4) for under 20k with 50k miles. pulls like a mule and gets great mileage (22 hwy, about 17 towing at 75mph.). plus diesel is cheaper, and it hauls ***!

my other dodge is a 360 v8 and gets about 14mpg if i am lucky!

My buddy has the 01 with V10 and I hate to ride with him, seems we have to stop going and coming for gas. Arrrgh he claims it gets 12 MPG but my guess it's closer to 9-10 either that or half his tank is crushed in.

Get a diesel, for no real sane reason.

I've got a 2000 f-250 with the v-10. Had it since it was new. Supercab, shortbed, Lariat not 4wd. When my wife drives it gets 14 - 16. When I drive it's a little less, but if you see me coming up behind you, move as far over to the right as you can, and sheild your eyes,,, the flash could burn your retinas.

Not short on power and the short bed only has a 25 gallon tank. That's why Dlinzy feels like he is stopping all the time. Every 300 to 325 miles you gotta' stop and fill'er up.

I've got a '02 f250 crew cab 4x4 v10. Highway driving at 75-80 mph I get 16 mpg. In town, I get 12 mpg. Just like any big engine, alot of it has to do with how much you lean onto the gas pedal. Towing my 22' fiberglass center console, its closer to 10 mpg. Definitely has power, just about the only time I feel the boat behind me is when I stop. No regrets buying this over a diesel. Do wish it either had a bigger gas tank or had a second tank.

I would go with the diesel personally, I have a y2k f-250 w/ the powerstroke and I pulled a friends ranger from ft worth to lake fork averaging about 85mph and I couldnt even tell the boat was there and I still got about 18mpg. just my .02 Chris

I alot depends on how long you generally keep your trucks. If you keep them 8-10 years I would suggest the diesel. Five years or less go with the gas if you are having problems justifying the extra cash. I have 1999 F250 Power Stroke and I love the way it pulls. You never feel the load behind you and have plently of power if you need it. Get the long bed and the fuel tank goes up to a 36 gallon tank. I believe that is with diesel or gas. Personally I will never own another gas engine. Diesels last forever.

Go with the diesel. I was in the market for a new truck this past June and everyone I talked to that had a diesel truck said that they would not go back to the gasoline engine. It did not matter if they had a Chevrolet, a Dodge or a Ford, they all said the same thing. I bought the Dodge diesel and couldn't be happier. Now I would not go back to the gasoline engine either in a truck. It is awsome pulling the boat.

I have '99 supercab with the v-10. I think you will get a wide varience on the milage from people because there are so many rear end gears to choose from.

I averaged 10 pulling a trailer until the motor lossened up a little around 120,000. Now, I average 12 pulling and 14 not towing on the highway. 13 around town for everyday driving to and from work. I have the 3.73 rear gear.

Hmm? there is a 2000 Excursion V10 at Texoma for sale at $15,900 with 55k on it. In great shape and a Lariat 2x4 a I remember it... white over tan leather. Is that a good buy? waht kind of mileage do you think it should get? TAlked to aguy here on TFF with an '01 4x4 diesel that sez he gets 16-17 in town and over 20 on the road but he looked forever for the "right truck". sez he gets ??13-14-15?? towing a 22' bay boat at 70+.
Does that sound about right?

I have a 2001 F250 Supercab Longbed, V10, 5 Speed manual, 3.73 rear end. 6.8 litres, 315 hp and 425 lbs foot torque. I get 13.9 around town and 17 on the highway unloaded. With the longbed you get a 38 gallon tank. I can get over 400 miles between fill ups. Pulls like nobody's business. No mods except for Flowmaster Cat-Back exhaust. I have heard the 4.30 rear end is much better for towing, but I have no complaints at all towing my 19 ft. Ranger and a heavily loaded 12X6 steel cargo trailer. It can tow both faster than I want to drive no sweat. If you use your truck for a lot of towing for work, than a diesel is definitely the way to go, but if you tow less frequently and use your truck as a daily driver, you should consider the V10. Less up front cost and definitely less cost on maintenance as opposed to the diesel. The difference in price between the V10 and the diesel (new or used) will buy a lot of gas. The V10 is not as thirsty as people would have you believe and the mileage difference between the V10 and the 5.4 V8 is negligible. IMHO the 5.4 seems a little underpowered for a 3/4 ton truck. The best thing about all the Super Duty engines - THEY'RE FORDS and they'll go a LONG ways when properly maintnained. If your looking a new Super Dutys, wait about a month until the 2005's are on the lot. The V10 has been upgraded to a 3 valve per cylinder design like the 4.6 and 5.4 V8's. Don't remember the exact numbers, but hp, torque, and mileage are all up over the 2004's.
