Me and my girlfriend are going to Houston this weekend and are staying for a few days and I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction on where to get on some fish. I would really like to catch trout or macks, but with my girlfriend she just likes catching anything so anything biting would be perfect >.<
I was thinking somewhere in the Galveston area. I'm used to fishing the channels down there (my grandparents had a house on a boat channel in dickinson) and the Texas City Dike (a little sad it's closed) but I've never really tried out the pier fishing.
Any tips would be great. Also, I have poles for any type of fishing down there, but we probably wont be doing any wading.

I have been catching a lot of big Black Drum off the beach by my school. I go to A&M galveston, If you go there park by the ship and go to the beach off the bow and cast fresh crab towards the channel. We've caught a lotta 30" class fish with the biggest being a 38" this weekend. You can also possibly catch a red too. I caught a flounder jiggin an artificial off the bottom. There out there man. I hate the jetties here. Its hard to get a fish up if its big.

I will also say that the fishing at Seawolf for Black drum is OFF THE CHAIN! right now! My crew is at 43, 30lb + fish in 3 days of fishing!. We rotate who pulls in the fish to make it more fun for all. Every single Fish my crew has cought has been over 30 pounds! Use FRESH LIVE blue crab from H.E.B. Ice them down to keep them alive long time. Tear off all legs but the paddle leg, flip it over, cut it in half, pop off top shell. leave as mutch guts as possible. Use Big arse hook, go through first shoulder hole and come out cut side. Use Thick arse 30-40 pound line as the granit rocks will make short work of anything less. 8 oz spider wieghts, as the current is RIPPING through there. well thats what I use on a 12 foot surf rod. I can (Well Maybe, This is fishing,LOL) promise you multiple 30lb+ fish! last weekend we pulled up a 47.5 drum, weekend before a 42lb, weekend before that a 35lb. Last sunday the Black drum spawn officially started. they was up shallow in the thousands popin the water top. Most of the bigg fish are cought right at the bow of the ship, the small pier, and Directly infront of the playground slide. DONOT USE SHRIMP! its useless right now. Cracked crab is king! Seawolf pics Im the nerd in the Crappie hat. GL! Beshure to deflate the fish before throwing them back. If you dont know how ask someone tossing a 12footer. Donot keep a Black drum over 22inchs. its got worms. only in the 17-22" range is edible.. LOL Your fish will be over 35" so no worries!

Is it open to public? I was there once (on Saturday), and got kicked out by a couple of security guards. They said only students and students' friends are allow to fish the location. Be there durring High tide, when the water is ripping inwards, to your right, if at any of the above locations. aka towards the entrance gate. This is when we catch the majority of our fish.

The trick with Black drum is to take the side fin (I dont know about other fish yet), lay it flat on the fish, then count back to the 3rd indention on the fins edge. Take a VERY thin and pointed fillet knife, ice pic, or a Fish fizzer (Its a large hyperdermic needle made for deflating fish) insert it at a sharp angle under a scale then press straight down into the fish (carefull not to pop a scale off) press in aprox 1/2". Depending on what you use to deflate the fish, you might need to wiggle the knife or ice pic around slightly while pressing on the fish's side. You will hear the gass coming out, Deflate him until the gass just stops on its own, Dont press hard or try and force more out.. His belly will shrink dramaticly.
Then simply toss him back. Just dont smash his face on a rock....
If you dont deflate the fish, they will swim upside down and potentially die. A 30+inch Black drum is over 12 years old. They grow up to 2inchs per year. So respect is in order for a fish of that size and age.
Just beshure and deflate them ASAP after you take your picture. This puts INTENSE pressure on the fish's organs. You will know what I mean when you see its A@# poking out. Catch fish, picture fish, Deflate fish, Release fish.

How long does the black drum season last? I will pay your way into the park if you will help me catch one of these things!

The easiest way to do it is to just go to academy and buy those steel double drop leaders. It doesn't matter steel or mono b/c drum have very poor vision and aren't leader shy anyway. Get you some crab or big shrimp and hook em on both drops. Put a 4-6oz sinker on the bottom of the setup and you're done. Cast and wait...and wait....and wait....and then BAM! Make sure your main line is at least 20lbs, braid or mono b/c black drum that size can pull pretty hard....for about 4 minutes and then they wear out and you can make quick work of them.

Go across the ferry to Bolivar, take a right on Boyt road down to the beach. This part of the beach is known as "the pocket", great place to stake out a few lines and wait for the big bite.
