I've have been wanting to check it out for some time now. I heard it's good fishing. It's off of 410 right? by the missions If it's good fishing it should be since there is very light fishing pressure from what I've observed over all the years I've lived near there. I've seen a few people fishing under the bridge under Military Drive and some fishing down past the dam where the bridge is catching perch. It's more of a drainage ditch than a river, with straight banks with rock and cement and very little natural structure to hold fish. but the river project is supposed to turn it more into a natural river setting, but I will believe that only when it's completed. Medina river park off Hwy 16 is more of a natural river with pools and moving water. I've caught catfish and perch off the bank there last year. Also there is a project in the works by SARA to open a park on the river further downstream from Espada, aimed at the kayak and canoe paddler, and fisherman as well. I haven't heard much on it as of late, but understand it is in the works. Maybe someone could shed some light on that project?

Dood, my brother in law and I have caught some big catfish at Espada. We don't fish the part off Roosevelt though, we go further into the park past the waterfall where the water passes over the road, park on the side of the road and walk down. Live and cut bait works best.
PS theres also a spot in Mission park behind the Golf Course that is good fishin. It's under a bridge behind a trailer park.

Biggest LM Bass I ever caught 9#+ Came out of Espada Park on a Tequilla Sunrise color 7" worm. I freaked when I hooked that Toad. I just stopped to practice cast a new Diawa Combo I had baught at Academy.
One of these days I'm going to Land the BIG ONE!!

Looks like I may try this river off the bank then. Thanks for the input guys! I have fished at the medina park off hwy 16 and caught 1 18" catfish there. Used. Hot dog weiners on a treble hook. But that's the only 1 I've caught there in 6 trips from the last 3 years. Anyone try here as well.

I've been going to Espada for about 3 weeks now (practicing trying for Bass) it's about my 7th trip now. Have had no luck whatsoever with Bass, caught a couple tiny catfish the first 2 trips there on my first cast. Today after giving up for Bass after 2 hours, decided to use a nightcrawler for Cat and to my surprise almost lost my rod!!! Had an 18in Catfish a good 3-4#, tasty son of a gun!!! I'd say it's better for catfish (or perch since I've hooked a couple of those as well). Then again my Bass skills are at beginner. Let me know of any bass tips and you happen to see some Hook 'Em hard boys!

I've caught quite a few bass out of the SA River. Most coming from Espada Park. Caught them on crankbaits, lipless crankbaits, buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, grubs, tubes ,worms and flukes. My biggest was a 6lbers that probably would have weighed a lot more if it wasn't so skinny. That fish was longer than my arm. Caught it in the park. Further down river, below the dam and past where the river goes over the road, I've caught a some nice 2-4lbers. And even further down, past both parks, I've caught some nice bass including two football 5lbers. In the Espada, one of my first cast was with a buzzbait. On that cast, there was a wolfpack of LMB's that followed the buzzer in. Some of those were in the 4-5lb range. Ever since that day, the SA River has been one of the places that I'm pretty sure I can get bit. Watch out for the snakes though. Stepped on a couple of water snakes there. Never got bit, but quite a few snakes. Hope this helps.

I fish the Espada Park a lot and it has been good for the most part. I usually fish for the sunfish. Lots of bank area and very easy to get to. I have also done good on the bass. Caught a 4 lber, last month on the far southeast end of the river.

So...the city is developing a paddling trail called Mission Paddling Trail from Blue Star Complex to 410-S. You will be able to paddle to the various missions, get out secure your yak and take a tour. You will be required to purchase a special permit to paddle north of 410. As of now there is no paddling allowed within SA city limits but that will be changing very soon. There are also plans to return the river to a more natural state. Currently there is a paddling trail between SA 410-S and the city of Goliad. It is an awesome and very remote paddle. Various agencies including the state and the SA Rivermen are working on making the river more paddle friendly, developing ingress/egress points signage and pocket parks along the way. They have even started having a yak/canoe race in the Rivercenter Canal along the riverwalk. It's about time huh.
Hope this info helps and gets some folks blood pumping like it did mine.

Good info jagg. I guess I'm gonna have to keep trying my skill at Bass. I've tried Watermelon colored worms, Junebug, Pumkinseed before below the dam. I tried getting a good spot right after where the water goes over the road, but it seemed to far down for me to try casting. Too much brush in the way. Do you fish from the road? A certain time frame you think is best? I've been doing lots of fishing at Miller's Pond lately on my free time. Plenty of luck with catfish, makes time fly by. Also just caught my first Rainbow Trout there last week! I'm planning on sharpening my Bass skills at Espada when spring time comes around. Thanks again for the insight!
