Wow, a pug? We have one and I don't think she could handle the heat in the summer. I would love to take her out, if she could.

Ihave a GSP and she has been fishing with me multiple times and has done great! Even when I get out to wade (saltwater) she will just lie down and hang out til I get back.

Basset Hound ~~they love the wildlife~~don't get in your way~~don't need to drink water every hour and oh yea~~~they sleep all the times. Get an extra long-eared basset, their ears are fun to watch in the wind and will probally keep him afloat !

+1 for Aussie...they are smart and very trainable. I fished with two different one for over 15 years however not from a boat. Tied the leash to my belt and they stayed right by my side while I fished day or night around a community lake. If you don't introduce them to the water while they are very young , they will avoid it like the plague.

I did have to remove hooks from their ears a time or two so keep your side cutters near by.

Take a corny dog. You'll never regret it.

HookaToad,
Sorry for your loss. I had to put my last lab down in May of 04' and I still miss him. I would look at a small breed if a fishing buddy is all your looking for. A Snouzer (Sp),Wiener Dog, etc. 1) They take up less room in the boat. 2) If they decide to take a drink it's easier to pull them aboard than a 102# lab 3) If it's hot it's easier for them little buggers to find enough shade to cover their whole body
Good luck on finding your (man's) best friend.

I agree with the corny dog. Wont eat a hook. Tastes delicious. And you can use the stick to pick your nose. Yay!!!!!

I dream of a better world. A world where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned of their motives.

We have a chocalate lab and a white chihuahua that are great in the boat no matter the weather we just cover her up when it gets to cold or put her in the rod box with a blanket. She never gets in the way like the lab does some times and has never fell in the water

Don't get a German Shorthair Pointer, too much energy! Mine is still my first mate but he likes to fall in and is solid muscle so he's not smooth swimmer like the labs. Do the world a favor, go to Prarie Paws in Grand Prarie and adopt. They have all sorts of dogs that need a good home. I have fostered several from there that would make great boat dogs.

Miniature Schnauzer. Small enough to find shade under a console. Mine rides in my lap while on plane. Very good bladder so I'm not pulling up to shore all the time for bathroom breaks. Gotta agree...if he does take a dip, it's an easy one-handed grab to get him back in. I only take him when the wind conditions will be fairly stable. He hasn't been out this year because most of the days the winds have been pretty nasty.

Um............yeah...............I got nothin'.

I had a Red Heeler that past away last Thanksgiving day, and he loved to go. They are extremely smart. He used to read my body language before i would set the hook. As soon as i backed up to the boat he would start doin circles. I miss that dog!! The best fishing partner you could ever have, never telling you where to go fish, cold or hot always ready. Red Heeler, Blue Heeler, or Aussie Shepard are my picks. Good Luck im about ready to get a new one to.
