Yeah they're good eating. I'm also surprised you caught them around Houston.

They are the easiest fish to reel in, the world though, even at about 10 inches and Half a pound, they didn't even take my float under. I figured out they were on when they splashed when they hit shore as I was checking to see if I had any bait left..

you are right about the Coppernose Bluegill.

agreed

that bass looks suspiciously like a spotted bass did you count the number of teeth on its tongue by any chance? haha!

It was only about 7 inches long, i'd think it would be to early to tell. I caught it and the coppernose in a stocked neighborhood lake, so it's probably just a lmb.

Rio Grande cichlids live in rivers and streams all around the hill country... frio, blanco,...
After the green sunfish the following fish are male and female bluegills respectively... This is determined by the size of the opercular flap... perhaps that is tmi
The bass is a largemouth, the spotted bass have the spots on the lower half of the body arranged in lines, if the spots are scattered, than you have a largemouth. At least that is what the litterature I read says... Suppose that could always be outdated. Sometimes it is hard for biologist to classify closely related species like spotted, largemouth, and guadalupe bass since these fish can cross.

Know your fish

WTG flag Rio's are fun too. I catch them like I do Green Sunfish (they are usually hiding in or around cover, especially rocks)
