I have never seen activity on the lake like it was today. The birds worked for 3 solid hours revealing fish, although there was no surface activity.
There were 4 boats in the area catching fish. George (fast guy}, who caught over 30 hybrids, John Varner and his crew, who caught over 60, 'native texan' who caught a bunch, and me who probably caught the least at 18.
All fish were legal hybrids with the exception of only a few sandies.
I went back out in the afternoon and caught fish with almost every cast and jig.
A big thanks to John Varner for the sassy shad that finally produced fish for me.
I will report tomorrow how it was on Saturday morning.

Which Sassy Shad was successful for you?

So sorry. I didn't see your post about color of sassy shad and location of fish.
Native Texan took care of the spot. The color of the sassy shad was day-glo. I was using another color without much success and Varner gave me one of his catch everytime sassys. And it worked.

Karry,
What kind of bird activity were you observing. You said there was no surface action? So, what species of birds and what was their behavior?
I assume they were not swooping down and aerial diving into the water to get shad on the surface.

Ron the fish werent blowing up , they would swirl....and yes the birds where diving, they where gulls....its not like spring surface action...but the birds saw them and we marked them with our graph...every now and then a fish would blowup but not many,,,,then you would see them also swirl...

John described it best. In the spring and summer, the birds are diving all over the place, hitting the surface. These gulls would hover over a spot with only a few attacking the surface.
Usually we stayed far enough away to ease up on the spot and as John said, mark them on the graph.
Also, the loons were working the area like crazy. I suspect the gulls were picking up what the loons left behind. And it was tons of birds just looking for that left over morsel.
Karry
PS. They were easily slabbed under the boat. In fact that is the way I caught most on that fateful Friday.

The only birds we saw working were behind the spillway on the way to Cherokee Landing.. caught some sandies, but not much luck with the Hybrids. The highlight of the day was talking with the famous Dream Team. What skills and personable to boot

Where you saw them, that's where you should have fished for hybrids. Unless, of course, if it was at the dock.
