When the water starts turning blue, I've caught them in Freeport/Surfside, Port Aransas of the jetties, and even occasionally in Galveston. I think they prefer that "blue" water over the sandy green.

I've caught the smaller Florida Pomps in the surf around Port A on a silver spoon, in the surf. Seems that they come in close with warmer, clear water. I want to say water temps around 80 degrees.
The larger African Pomps are normally caught offshore in deeper waters.

Thanks guys. I have a boat fit for the salt I can chase these little buggers if I have to. What do you use for bait? I have only caught them in Qatar in nets.

I caught them by accident. I was throwing a silver Johnson Sprite spoon in the surf and began catching one after the other. I don't normally target them so I don't know what else they'll hit. They are acrobatic and put up quite a fight for their size.

They are on the beachfront now. Just throw a peeled piece of dead shrimp in the second gut and you will catch whiting and a possible Pompano

Shrimp and Fishbites... +1 on the shrimp and fishbites. Wind and surf has to lay down for a couple days for the water to be clear enough for your best chances. Not your everyday type conditions, but it happens.

Small pink bucktails called doc's goofy jig are the best I have found...drive the beach looking for "skipping" pomps..they will literally skip out of the water when they school...if no schools are present use a triple hooked chicken rig with pink floats before the hooks as attractors..use clams, sandfleas, or shrimp as bait...let it soak..best if used with several rods cast out to different areas and depths. fish high incoming tide for most beaches.

I use the 1/4oz spro bucktails tipped with a small piece of shrimp.
