I'm looking at a new pickup, but I don't like the Dunlop tires. Anyone ever had experience asking a dealer to change out the tires, or are they married to the vehicle? Also, if the vehicle has a sticker price of 26-five hundred, what would be a good figure to start the bickering with?

Sticker price like that I would expect to pay around $20-$22k. Let them know that getting different tires is part of the deal. They will make it happen most of the time.

I agree When you tell them you want the truck tell them the only way you will drive out with the truck is if they change the tires they will do it.

Also, if the vehicle has a sticker price of 26-five hundred, what would be a good figure to start the bickering with? You're asking about 2 things that will affect each other. If they change the tires, they loose profit & will not discount it as much. Also, they will go to Discount Tire (or somewhere similar), pay the same retail price for the tire that you want, & then mark up the price. Work a discounted deal & then take it & get the tires yourself.

My brother in law worked that kind of deal when he bought his Dodge. He bought the basic "work truck" model but wanted the wheels and tires that came on the next model up. It took some haggeling but he got it done with minimal increase in price.
Im gonna do the same on my next truck. Ford is common for putting Contennintal brand tires on new F150's. That is what my F150 had when i bought it new. They are crappy tires! The next truck i buy will probably be a 4x4 F150 and im not gonna leave the dealer with some slick street tires on a 4x4 like they try to sell on them. I want some all-terrain tires on it or there is no deal. Just tell them what you want. You are buying the truck so you are in the position to say no thanks and walk away. They will make the deal on some tires so you wont go else where. If they dont, then they arent in the business to satisfy the customer and i wouldnt use that dealer. The hit they would have to take on the right tires for you is minimal for them because they make so much by selling the truck to you. They just have to be stubborn about it to pinch pennies.

15-20% of sticker is what you should shoot for. Sticker can be a little misleading because not all manufacturers have the same mark up. The way I did it last time worked pretty well. I got several competing via email. You can usually tell which ones are the hungriest. Do some research on dealer cost also. Dealers get rebates but it can still be helpful.
Since I use to buy primarily 4x4s I tried several times to get dealers to swap tires with no luck. The last time they were not even going to give me credit for the ones they took off. In this case I had another truck that was needing tires soon so I just went to a tire dealer and kept the originals. Tire dealers used to give you their cost for trade in as long as the tires still had the wear beads.

If you can find another brand of tire you like on a truck that is comparable to the one you want to purchase, they will typically change them out for you. I have had this done a few times over the years.

Get you deal almost done , then tell them you want XXXX tires on it or no deal. If they balk....give them your number and say "call me if you change your mind. Meanwhile, I'll drive to ( whatever other nearby city with a dealer) "
Then walk out. Nothing to lose.
Now, Donald...please pick John Bolton for your running mate.

Not to change the subject, or hijack this thread, but as a salesman at a new car dealership I have a couple questions to ask you folks....
1. What do all of you people do for a living? 2. What is wrong with profit?
I'd be willing to bet that the owners of the companies you all work for make a profit.?.? Am I totally wrong for thinking this? I mean if there is no profit, how could they afford to employ you?
Us, as salespeople have to eat also, we also have families to feed, mortgages to pay, so what makes us different from you?
Threads like this really get me going.. I hope you all have very successful lives!!
It's impossible for every person that buys things to only have a bad experience at a car dealership. Sure there are some bad people out there, but they're in all walks of life, not just at car dealers.
When is the last time any of you people went to Wal-Mart and told them you give them 15-20% less than the price tag for a set of towels, or windshield washer fluid, or aa batteries.. It's insane how much money Wal-Mart makes, but EVERYBODY has to have a car or truck given to them... This upsets me tremendously!!
Rant over.. Good day folks!!

I understand that profit is needed for the commision on the car, but I am not going to give $2,000 or more to someone that walks me thru a truck. I will usually know more about the vehicles I am buying than the salesman. With boats it is different. The salesmen usually know the boat 100%. But I am still going to shop around. I saved over $8k on my boat and $3k on my truck by calling around for a couple days.

You'll take 200.00 for a full day guided trip for 2 people, and still provide the same service to me? Meaning, you'll provide the gear, gas and everything, and all my partner and I have to bring is lunch and a cooler for our catch?

Rant over.. Good day folks!! Why would someone want to pay full price if you dont have too? My last truck i bought had a sticker of $30,000, i emailed the dealer and they wanted $27,000 for it. I emailed Monty at Moritz and he got me the same truck from the dealer i had already emailed for $21,900. Thats $5,100 in my pocket. And Monty didn't come on here whinning that i tried to jew him down, he thanked me for my purchace.

Fordboy brought up an interesting point, so I thought I do a little research. Here's how the practice of haggling over the price of a car came to be: It's one of the enduring oddities of American retailing: car dealers haggling over price with their customers. There's history here, of course. People bargained over horses. And since the proud beasts gave way to the horseless carriage, hardball negotiating between buyer and seller has continued on the car lot. The practice allowed salesmen (and most of them were men) to bamboozle naive buyers with a blizzard of negotiating tactics and generate outsize commissions. http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/SavingandDebt/SaveonaCar/CarDealersStakeOutHaggleFreeZones.aspx
