I felt like I could cast at least somewhat proficiently when I left the TFF after FFT, but later found out that I could cast an actual fly on a creek nowhere near as well as an empty line in a parking lot. My casting sucks like a lamprey.
Well, you lose one, you rig one.

I do casting classes every Saturday from 10a - 12p at the Pearland Bass Pro Shop. Which store do you live near?

My casting sucks like a lamprey. It is the next step up on the gradient for sure. Were you in an open area or were there trees behind you?

And yes, if you are near a Bass Pro, head on over for lessons. It is simply a matter of practice practice practice. Like any other skill it demands practice.
Get on the interwebs and look up the stores nearest you, call the fly shop and they'll tell you when to show up. They are all pretty much offering casting on a regular basis.

Also make sure that your fly isn't too big for your line. If you're trying to cast 1/0 deerhair bugs on your 5wt, you're not going to like the result. Even being just a little "overweight" with your fly will cause a beautiful loop to die a horrible death.
Post up what you're casting and we'll pitch in and try not to make it worse.

if you live near fort worth, our june meeting is all about casting. many certified casters will be on the grassy lawn, where we meet, throwing lines for a couple of hours. great place to learn.

There are lot's of opportunities coming up.
- Tomorrow and Saturday in New Braunsfels at the FFF Gulf Coast Council fly fishing expo, there will be a whole series of casting classes over the next two days. This event is open to the public and it should be the biggest fly fishing event in Texas this year.
- I'm pretty sure the Bass Pro in Grapevine still offers an introductory casting class every Saturday at 10:00. You might want to call and confirm.
- April 20 in Sherman, I have an informal casting session planned at 7;00. Another one is tentatively planned for May 18.
- The Ft Worth casting session that is mentioned about is a great place to get some casting help. I think the date is June 1.
- June 19 is "Texoma on the Fly" at Eisenhower state park. We'll have casting classes in the morning.

I hope so, I enjoying getting to play with all the toys.
Jeff and Brandon brought all of the rods to January's "Tie In". They have always been great about helping support the Texoma events, but I just haven't had a chance to confirm the date with them yet.
FYI, for anyone wondering what we're talking about, when TFO Flyrods goes to a fly fishing show or event, they bring their rods with them. And I mean ALL of their rods in all size. And the rods are there to be cast. It is a great opportunities to cast and compare how different rod models and different line sizes feell when you cast them. TFO has brought their demo rods to the past fly fishing events that we've had at Lake Texoma in June.

Todays my birthday and I just picked up a fly rod at Bass Pro in Grapevine. It's something that I've always wanted to do, but just never got around to it. They have casting classes every Sat and Sunday at 1000 in the parking lot and a fly tying class on Wednesday nights. Until then I've got a neighborhood pond completely void of obstacles to practice on!

= here, print this & cut around the edges, take your fly stuff back to BPS, you'll be better off in the long run, take that money & invest in something with a future...emmm, like gambling.

I'm in DFW so I'll try to make it to Bass Pro or Cabela's. There were some trees on the little creek I was fishing and sure enough I eventually found one. That being said, I was looking for open areas where I'd have plenty of room to cast. I think part of my problem was that both times I broke out the fly gear I had been already been fishing with my spinning outfit for hours. Casting is completely different and I had to really focus and pay attention to casting the fly rod. When I did, I improved slightly but most of my casts still ended in a pile of line about 5'-8' from my feet. I was casting a 5wt rod with a wf 5wt line and using size 4 and 6 clousers. Not sure what I was doing wrong after I started paying closer attention to what I was doing, but it was ugly.
Well, you lose one, you rig one.
