Ive often wondered how come more Captains dont book trips at night during full moon phases when for instance marlin are tailing and arbitrarilly jumping and wont take live baits that are in their faces.Everyone knows when marlin and other game fish are acting that way its a night bite. And with a green light at night you can catch flying fish easily with a dip net and we all know that when they are on a hook something good will happen.Especially in Cabo and a few other spots. Thanks for any and all feedback.

Possibly the dangers of unexpected bad weather? I've done it, many times, but every time I got a little nervous out there about storms coming up between me and land.
Night time on the open Gulf is an incredible experience for the angler.

There are plenty of overnighters that go out and cast for Yellow Fin Tuna all throught the night and back in durring the day to drop jigs and back out at night to cast for YFT.

I have never heard of a billfish being caught at night besides swordfish in the gulf. There are quite a few people that stay overnight to fish for yellowfin and swords. Its pretty cool seeing a good sized sword coming up at night and jumping under the spreaders... its what dreams are made of.

I won't run my boat offshore at night. I've seen too many things floating out there, right at the surface. A friggin' huge tree would do a number on your boat.

That would be interesting. Kind of scary at night though. Have been checking out different fishing options for this season. This would definitely be interesting.

August was the only month I used to spend the night shark fishing. You can usually depend on the weather in August. Traveled from The Keys to Port A once. Nighttime in the middle of the gulf is beautiful. No sound just stars that reach all the way to the water all around you. Very peaceful. You can see anything that moves in the water because of the phosphorus in the water. One night we had a boat trail us. We could see him on radar and we could see his phosphorus spray from the bow of their boat. No lights. Who knows. After about a half hour he left.

I have camped 55 miles out of Freeport on severial occasions. (26 ft T top). I knew there was a piece of pipe all lite up to tie up at. Good bottom fishing after dark, never was to fond of hooking up with a King, Cuda, or angry shark after dark or being on the hook and not being able to fish because some tanker just came close and the skipper was in his bunk and the man at the wheel was sleeping. The down side of the platform connection is that all and I mean ALL the birds roost on the platform, you are floating down wind with the birds 40 to 60 feet above you, gravity and the cool breeze are not your friends, the bird poo really does taste like fish. In my short 13 yrs off shore I have seen trees, truck tires (mounted), propane tanks, refrigerators and just about anything that floats. If you do this , be very mindful of the weather. I love the ocean and if you want to die she is always willing to assist. The best times to do these trips IMHO is during the dark of the moon. When you see the glow in the morning, before the sun breaks the horizon, get out amongst the fish, the Hoo, dolphin, and everthing else will be on the prowl up top, set your spread and you will hear the reel sing. just when you think it can not get any better, you run to a drifting shrimp boat that is cleaning the by catch off the deck and the blue water is black, with Tuna. Just my two cents... Skipper Capt Crunch (thats what the first mate calls me when I catch the bigger fish) Ken S "Lucky Charm"
May your seas be flat and your bite the best ever

The boat you had trailing you was quite possibly a coast guard cutter. they run without lights at night for drug interdiction work
