I have started to use a straight 3/0 offset hook as opposed to a EWG or wide gap hook for all my plastic fishing and have found my hook up ratio to be much higher than wide gap hooks. I'm I missing something?

widegaps are for bulky baits so the plastic doesnt ball up on the hook.

Nope, you're just doing what most of the pros have been doing for years.

I prefer an EWG type hook. The plastics look more natural on an EWG. FZ1 don't miss no fish on a EWG.

Weightless Texposed Weightless Flukes and Senko's only Gama EWG's. They come in a variety of wire weights and sizes that allow you to adjust to meet the different sizes of baits and add/reduce weight to meet condition requirements. They also have a more straight section of the hook that passes thru the bait to allow more subtle tail action of the bait when dead sticking. All other solid body worm type baits I use the more traditional Owner offset worm hooks. With those my general rule is that I want no less than 1/2 of the bend of the hook to extend below the body of the worm with a T'rig type setup.

I only use EWGs for texposing flukes and senkos. I use the straight shank for everything else. I don't want the hook point parallel to the worm's body, I want it to come out of the plastic at an angle when I set the hook.

I recently switched to EWG hooks for the bulk of my fishing and have not been disappointed. Still use straight shank for lizards.
