I use a redfish rig which is essentially a Carolina Rig, weighted with a 1-2 oz. egg sinker about 3 ft above a 6/0 circle hook. I hook 'em just rear of the dorsal and above the lateral line. That way they can swim around some. Works like a charm.

I saw an unusual rig. Heavy sinker on the end, eighteen inch dropper loop with the bait hooked under the dorsal fin, and a small float above it all. The weight overpowered the float and took the whole rig to the bottom. The dude said the float kept the bait out of the grass; otherwise, it was able to swim freely on the dropper loop.

A lip hooked minnow can live a long time and remain active.
The rig described by SuperflyMD sounds like it would be well worth the effort to set up. If you're gonna' hook 'em under/behind the dorsal, be sure not to hit the spine.

+1 I've had mullet and croakers last longest this way. Piggies will stay alive all day like this (assuming the bite is bad).

I'm looking forward to trying the bridle rig I saw on YouTube. Seems like it would work especially well with a circle hook.

if i'm right, the lateral line is a good reference to not hit the spine.

i usually hook right above the anal vent below the lateral line and never have had any baitfish die on me.
