So I have seen a few people fishing from a Kayak and it peaked my interest. So I started reading up on it a little, and I have decided to give it a try. sounds like it will be enjoyable and give me a little exercise and access to places I cant bank fish.

I'm a bigger guy, 5'11 and about 260lbs so I was wondering what a good Kayak would be.

I was thinking about a cobra Fish N' Dive since it is reportedly stable and has a large carrying capacity, There are times I might bring my 7 yr old son, he loves fishing too :-) I gotta keep the cost under 1K. any other Yaks I should be considering?

Also anyone know some good places to try on Grapevine lake or Lake Lewisville? Most of my fishing is off a bank near the Old Alton Bridge in Hickory Creek, It would be nice to try a few new places.

Thanks,
Tim

If you haven't checked out texaskayakfisherman.com it has much info on bigguy yaks a world of expertise the fish n dive is more of a btb yak I think probably better options for the water you fish and some have a gator hatch seat for a little one to sit. A kayak is a great way to fish though good luck

If your bringing your son you need to look into one of the large yaks like the malibu x factor or cobra f n d. I think the malibu even has a thing called a gator hatch that has a seat for a kid up front

Many access points to Grapevine and Lake Lewisville. I use Murrell Park for Grapevine and the park in Lake Dallas for Lewisville because they are convenient for me and also free access. Your son might be too big in a year or two to ride comfortably on a one-man kayak with you, so plan on getting him his own in the not-too-distant future!

I bought a trident 13 the same weekend my buddy got a malibu x-factor. We fished galveston the first weekend and the upper brazos the second weekend. Half way through the Brazos trip he had a hole in the bottom of his malibu. I told him i would fix it up, so I started looking on the internet for others with this problem and how they fixed it. I found ALOT of people with the exact yak with the same problem. Personally I would never spend my hard earned money on a Malibu product. There are to many other quality brands out there. I love my trident.

Just my .02...I would potentially look at getting your son setup in his own kayak. There are some basic kayaks out there that wouldn't cost as much as yours all rigged up, but would provide a great platform for him to use and fish out of for awhile.

If you all have time this Saturday, come on out to Lake Grapevine (and bring your son) and test drive a few kayaks at our demo day. It would be a great opportunity to get him in one as well to see if he likes it.
