i managed 6 giant western diamondbacks when i was the live exhibits mgr at bass pro and would let them loose in an electrical(sealed off) room wearing boots and chaps. kinda fun for me. when i was younger i used to breed pythons but thats a different story and got out of it when i was struck in the face by a 14 footer. as a kid i was struck by a copperhead in the hand while trying to remove it from my stringer of gills it was eating. just use common sense and they are fine just like sharks...

I was striper fishing with a guide on Lake Buchanan years ago. We were fishing with live shad, and the guide would cut up the dead shad that floated up in his bait tank to make chum. In between cutting up chum, he would toss or pile the dead shad in one back corner of his boat. We stopped for a shore lunch, and then came back and loaded in the boat. The guide, my wife, and I all stepped right over a moccasin that had boarded the boat himself for lunch - eating that dead shad. While my wife and I were absolutely coming unglued, the guide very calmly pinned the snakes head down with the rim of his fish net and pulled out his fillet knife and cut the snakes head off - all in one fluid motion without hesitation. It happen so frequently to him it was just another day at the office?

cottens are very very agressive, and usually atttack for no reason other than they can, im from ca also, and have seen some really nasty ones in the last few years, be careful This is a myth that somebody who was afraid of snakes made up. Here is a quote form an extensive reptile web site. "This dangerous semi-aquatic snake is truly an aggressive reptile that will stand its ground or even approach an intruder." http://www.kingsnake.com/snakegetters/hk/handling.html http://books.google.com/books?id=NTJq_6K...ion&f=false http://www.docstoc.com/docs/14719145/Cottonmouth-Snake http://www.animalcorner.co.uk/venanimals/ven_snakescotton.html All these disagree. No venomous snake is going to purposely chase you for the soul reason of biting you. If you step on it, it might bite you. If you step close to it, it might bite you. If you mess with it, it might bite you. If you pick it up, it will probably bite you. Leave them alone and they will leave you alone.

rarely do snake bites kill. Probably more likely to die of a wasp sting.
Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it !

I think snakes have personalities like any animal. Some moccasins may act aggressive while others won't. I do think I've seen more aggressive mocassins than other types. Most aggressive snake I ever saw though was a copperhead.

Had a 5'6" rattler decide to join a group conversation after taking down deer blinds. Didn't wait for him to bite but he sure seemed aggressive.

I decided to go fishing on Lake Lavon the other day and i parked in Brokedale Park. I had to walk through a dead and dry Coastal (grass used for hay) field. Are there gonna be a lot of snakes in that? And also, I believe that most animals won't bother people if they're not bothered. A lot of times people will get bitten because they unknowingly walk into a snake's territory, corner it, or get to close to the snake's eggs

I saw 12 on texoma Friday after the storm. Little ones, big ones, and all ugly! A couple were swimming, but most were sitting in the sun on rocks and in bushes. They were all just water snakes, I would get close to each one and poke at it until I could clearly see the head and eyes. Some would strike at the rid, while the others just got into the rocks, or swam off.
Every snake I play with will either head the opposite direction or get in defense mode and coil up. It doesn't matter whether it's a rattler, cottonmouth, water snake or chicken snake(not sure if that's the correct name).
Only had one actually chase me for no reason. It was a big ol chicken snake while I was fishing a pond. I've never been so scared of a non poisonous snake in my life.

Umm, see black mamba. Glad they're not indigenous to the US!

If you spend anytime on or around the water you need to be able to identify what your looking at. It only takes 5 minutes to learn the difference and you will have it for ever.
99% of the so called moccasins people see are common harmless watersnakes. One common rule about all wild animals you encounter, is if you give them a way to leave they will. Just dont screw with them and they will leave you alone.
BTW, if its over 3' long then I can guarantee you its not a water moccasin. +1

dont know if its the time of year or how cold/hot it is but cottonmouths have a nasty disposition and are definitely agressive.
