A cottonmouth will chase your arse! If you've ever been around them, you'll usually smell 'em before you see 'em. Nasty suckers!

One common rule about all wild animals you encounter, is if you give them a way to leave they will. Just dont screw with them and they will leave you alone.

BTW, if its over 3' long then I can guarantee you its not a water moccasin.

+1 I had snakes all my life....Fish Killer is right.

This is a myth that somebody who was afraid of snakes made up.

Here is a quote form an extensive reptile web site.

"This dangerous semi-aquatic snake is truly an aggressive reptile that will stand its ground or even approach an intruder."

I saw one in a tree Yesterday at Pat Mayse. The first one I have seen this Year. The good news is that usally when You start to see Snakes and Bluebonnets here in Texas the fishing turns on.

cottonmouths are curious and will check you out. Do not make it mad or it will try to get you every time you put your hand over the side of your boat

Has anyone ever had a snake come aboard your boat? Several of the bass tour guys have talked about fishing when the snakes hatch and they are all over the place and trying to get in the boat. Does that happen in texas or is that further east?

Fishkiller and mibass are correct here. I have seen many common water snakes around the lakes but very few Cottonmouths. And Cottonmouths are not aggresive unless cornered or stepped on. If giving the chance they will flee every time. Also by coincidence, when I was a kid in the early 70s, we camped their at miller road frequently. My brother and I would use a spot light at night. We used a trolling motor and slowly went down the rocks and caught many with our bare hands. We would use a leather glove for the big ones. It was not uncommon for us to have a few dozen in our live well at the end of our hunt.. All this time we never saw a Cottonmouth at all. But on the other hand if you fish creeks or ditches, look out for were you step. Most of the time a Cottonmouth will be laying up well above the water line.

a snake can bite you as high as half of its length. call your local hospitals if worried to see if they carry the proper vaccine. its expensive.
